Upon check in, I was handed a review card, which in hindsight felt less like customer service and more like an act of remarkable optimism. So review 1849 I will.
1849 Hostel somehow manages the rare feat of combining filth, chaos, hostility, vermin, and administrative incompetence into one unforgettable experience.
The experience began with a 15minute search for a parking space in a car park largely occupied by broken-down vehicles, setting the tone nicely. On entering reception, I was greeted by what I initially assumed was a particularly unruly guest being removed from the premises. In fact, it was the receptionist: visibly intoxicated, drinking hard cider, loudly swearing at a group of five understandably distressed guests.
The issue? The hostel had apparently made a clerical error and believed the guests were checking out that day, despite them having paid for another night. The solution, naturally, was to throw their personal belongings (including their towels and food) into the skip outside. This skip, already notable for its overpowering smell, was also home to the largest rat I have ever seen, which at least suggested something on the property was thriving.
When it came time for my own check-in, I was presented with a “contract” detailing an impressive catalogue of fines for various infractions, and informed that once checked in I would not be eligible for a refund. Given the circumstances unfolding in front of me, I reasonably asked whether I could see the room first, particularly as one room I had already passed had old, wet cat food sitting outside the door. This request was refused.
As it was Good Friday and options were limited, I reluctantly took the risk.
The room itself appeared to house at least one long-term resident, which in itself is not unusual. What was less reassuring was the cupboard filled with discarded food packaging and used sanitary products. I was fortunate to secure the lower bunk, as the upper bunk on the opposite bed had no ladder whatsoever, presumably an exciting challenge for the more athletic traveller.
The kitchen offered no respite. On entering to store some food, I once again encountered the receptionist, still shouting and swearing, this time while searching for a bottle opener for her beer and complaining about someone touching her food.
Throughout the hostel, notices threatened fines for virtually everything: leaving rubbish, leaving food, entering the kitchen after 10pm, and, most ironically of all, not leaving shared spaces clean. This would perhaps have carried more weight had the sinks not appeared to have gone untouched since before Christmas.
At 4am, I was woken by scratching noises. After a brief and deeply unwelcome investigation, I discovered there was a mouse in the room. The following morning, when stripping the bed as requested, I found mouse droppings beneath the sheet I had slept on.
Naturally, my first instinct was to shower immediately. Unfortunately, the bathroom presented fresh horrors: soiled toilet paper overflowing from the communal bin and suspicious brown stains running up the shower wall.
I have travelled for over 15 years, including extended periods in developing countries without running water. This is, without exaggeration, the worst accommodation I have ever stayed in.
You could not pay me to return.

1. Breakfast was ok - only pancakes and sugar syrup- the pancakes was delicious - could have been better if there was butter and maple syrup to go with the pancakes.
2 the mattress in room 21 where we stayed was too soft and saggy and sagged towards the middle- time for a new firmer mattress for all the other rooms as well?
3. There was very limited parking in the hostel grounds- had to park on the kerbside outside on the road- any chance of getting more carparking for your clients?
4. A few good pair of scissors for the kitchen and for our use please, and fry pans which are blackened and with handles swivelling/loose should be replaced with new ones?

was super happy, kept to myself, maybe having a mini fridge in each room would be good, otherwise pretty happy with my stay. thanks.

I found the environment to be extremely uncomfortable and unsuitable . The room had a strong, unpleasant odor, and the only fan provided was not functioning.the lack of a working fan made the room unbearable. When I approached the reception to address the issue, I was initially unable to find anyone available. When I finally spoke to a staff member, they informed me that there were no spare fans available, which was both disappointing and unacceptable
Additionally, the overall hygiene and condition of the room were extremely poor. The washroom and toilet were in a terrible state, emitting a foul smell that made the stay even more unpleasant.
