Disappointing Stay, Spa & Dine Experience!

We booked a Stay, Spa and Dine break here, which included a stay in a Premium Room, Spa entry for the duration of our stay, and a £25 each dinner allowance.
Check-in was seamless, and we were pleasantly surprised at the size of the room, the huge bathroom, and the fact that it opened out onto the golf course; we loved watching the moorhens! It was disappointing that most of these rooms, however, did not each have tables and chairs outside, and that there was just a meagre scattering along the outside patio areas, presumably on a first grab basis. The bathroom looked like a recent refurb, but the room itself was unbelievably dull and a little tired, and the two single beds were actually sunken in the middle, we later discovered, with a poor-quality mattress protector that didn’t hide the fact that it wasn’t a true super king. We didn’t actually sleep too great because of the mattresses, and in the cold light of day, it was disappointing to see just how grubby the place was – stains and cigarette burns on the carpet, and goodness knows what splashed up the walls in several areas. How can things like this be missed??? As for the shower, we didn’t have the need to use it, but the tray was pitted with something dark... The room really did feel unloved, and when we came to use our robes for the Spa, one was still damp in the wardrobe and smelled strongly of chlorine. Reception did send a replacement straight away, and also someone to fix the safe that wasn’t working. But things like this shouldn’t be happening in a hotel of this calibre.
I have been to Ramside Spa on a couple of occasions for a Day visit, and it hadn’t evolved at all from previous times. Perhaps being a Sunday, it was extremely busy, but it was disappointing that there were so many screaming young children present. I am now aware that children are only allowed in the pool at certain times, and I think that we were unlucky with our timing – and encountering a delightful parent who was encouraging his daughter to urinate in the pool!!! It certainly wasn’t a place that we wanted to spend any more than an hour or so there, and so the Spa entry perk was lost on us. “Spa” tends to suggest tranquillity and nurturing, and it simply didn’t have that vibe. When we came out, there were no towels available in either changing rooms for a shower, and we had to ask. We returned to the Spa early the next morning, and we took advantage of the relative quietness. But the dirty state of the floor area in both the main swimming pool bit, and through to the second area, again, made us feel that it was all a bit grotty and unloved. It certainly helped us to decide that Spa Membership, which we were potentially considering (and the reason for our visit), would definitely not be happening here.
We chose Fusion for dinner, as we are vegetarian, and find the presence of a live lobster tank in The Rib Room quite offensive. The one course each that our allowance covered was served quickly and efficiently, and tasted very nice. But the food was hugely over-priced, and had it not been part of the deal, it’s not a place that we would choose to go to.
When we checked out, we weren't asked how things had been Perhaps just as well... So all in all, an expensive and disappointing stay, and certainly one that did not represent value for money or invoke any sense of relaxation. Our second night in Durham, at a well-known chain hotel, cost one-fifth of this price, and we left refreshed, feeling like valued customers!

Lost Property (confirmed found and safe until it was time to collect)

The hotel and facilities are very good, that is not in question.
My 1 star review is based on how they dealt with me and a matter of lost property. I used their gym facility whilst staying at the hotel, leaving my brand new Samsung Earpods in the gym, I called the hotel two days later to see if they had been found, to be told a pair matching the description had been found and they would hold onto them until my next stay so that I could connect to them to prove they were mine.
I recently returned to the hotel to be told they must have been claimed by someone else and told that they could not help and that I should refer to their lost property policy.
A very poor service and outcome so be aware. If something isnt quite right with your stay or you voice dissatisfaction, dont expect a good customer outcome.

Stayed in: Aug 2026

For what must be an older hotel, the amenities are excellent, modern and well kept, swimming pool is massive with a jacuzzi hot tub, didn’t use the spa but looks amazing, bedroom was lovely, a nice size overlooking the garden area, nice and quiet, didn’t use golf course but ‘The Pin’ is a great place to visit ( in hotel grounds) sports bar, bowling, driving range, shuttle board and lots more, friendly helpful staff, will definitely be back!

Troo Business event

The event organised at the Ramside with Helen Rosebury and Kay Graham was amazing and such good value for money having the most amazing venue, the cathedral suite, amazing food, staff and also activities. Well worth the money spent and all of our staff had the most amazing day.
