Artistic, Spacious, Clean, Good Value

Zena Star is great. The owner is welcoming and relaxed but reliable and very artistic.
He has put so much time and effort into this place that you cannot see in the photos. He is really talented and has made the shared spaces (restaurant and bar, stair cases etc) so creatively done you have to stop and take a look on the tour of the building.
The rooms are huge, and have a balcony. Fully equipped. Clean. Safe and secure. Views of the sea and based 1min walking distance from centre of town.
I highly recommend, its great value for money. Had a great stay.

Cooking with Gas Only

On a positive note Zena Star is in a great location with sea and mountain views. Fairly clean accommodation. However, there was no electric kettle, toaster or microwave. These would have been helpful as this is a self catering apartment. Cooking is on a gas oven only, attached to a small gas canister under the sink. The WiFi worked only on the balcony for just the first 3 days out of our 7 nights stay. The bed was very hard and uncomfortable and the pillows were old and lumpy and did not smell clean.

Nice location and views; with shortcomings in terms of equipment and cleanliness.

The ratings are older and no longer entirely accurate. The apartment has seen its best days; you don't seem to care much anymore: Cleanliness leaves much to be desired, kitchen equipment is inadequate; for Wi-Fi - if you work it - you have to go to the far corner of the terrace.
Positive is the central location and the large terrace with a great view to the port and to the life of the local population.

Hotellägare Paolo är en pärla

Trevligt litet hotell mitt i hamnstaden Tarrafal. Rummet hade alla bekvämligheter vi behövde - balkong, dusch, sköna sängar, kokvrå, tillgång till tvättmaskin - det enda vi saknade var en bra brödkniv. Om man vill ha havsutsikt ska man be om ett rum högt upp i huset; vi bodde på andra våningen och där hade vi mest utsikt över ett husbygge på tomten intill :)
Paolo som äger hotellet pratar engelska med inslag av modersmålet italienska och lite portugisiska och franska, ibland inte helt enkelt att förstå men med lite gester och god vilja gick det fint. Och han ordnade glatt transport till och från flygplatsen, kom med tips på vad man bör se och göra på Sao Nicolau och ritade en karta med alla de viktigaste ställena. Tarrafal är en liten stad och där finns knappt några turister; resebyrån var öppen ytterst sporadiskt så det var superbra att kunna fråga Paolo om sånt man undrade.
När vi var där bodde det tre andra gäster som återkommit flera år i rad, och som blivit goda vänner med Paolo. Det tolkade vi som ett bra betyg :)
