Excellent view from Room! Lobby underwhelming.

Fantastic views of opera house and harbour from our Executive Opera house city room. Room is a lovely size but showing signs of wear. Blu bar on the 36th floor is a must visit. Drinks and service were superb as were the very attentive staff.
The most disappointing thing about this hotel is the underwhelming sense of arrival; the lobby is tired and very small and totally disappointing and reminiscent of a 3 star train station. It needs a total makeover with a wow factor.

Break away

We travelled to the Shanghai La from Ireland and from the time we arrived to the second we left the whole experience was wonderful. All the staff are all so friendly, helpful and kind. The rooms were spotless. The hotel was amazing all in all a great hotel. We’d a view of the Opera house(worth paying the extra money for it) we got to see fireworks every night from our room and look out at The Opera house every morning too.

Bitter sweet experience

Fantastic view from the 21st floor of Sydney Harbour and Opera, from the beautiful big bedroom (and bathroom). Stayed 10 days. Great bedding, fluffy towels and absolutely everything else that a 5* hotel provides.
Quite close to everything, the wharf, restaurants etc. Modern and luxurious. The personnel is nice, and often, they would ring the doorbell, asking if we needed anything.
The 2 negative aspects are: Because it's so huge, (565 rooms and 36 floors) there are so many people everywhere, with corporate meetings, queues for check-in/checkout, queus at breakfast after 8, in the lobby, in the 6 lifts, cruise ship passengers, weddings, parties.... that you're just another anonymous face in the crowd.
The 2nd one is too long to go into (noise from the nearby lifts and change of the flight date to Dubai by Emirates, due to the Iran situation), we were offered a "corner room" view and never an honest paid upgrade, only an incredibly expensive one for the one extra night. So we had to pack, take a taxi to a (beautiful) hotel 5 minutes away and to unpack, to stay just the one night before flying back to Europe. Bitter sweet experience, even if the Front Manager was very nice, no honorable compromise was ever considered. Nevertheless, a lovely 5* luxury hotel with everything you need but next time we will choose a smaller, guest-friendly, landmark, Heritage hotel, rich in History and character, without so many people, guests and personnel included, everywhere, all rushing around noisily, giving off stress and hasty urgency vibes. And where suitable adjustments are made should problems arise, without a feeling of pretentiousness from the hotel. Especially when you're staying 10 days.

A Return Visit That Fell Short

We first stayed at Shangri-La Sydney in 2019 and had a wonderful experience, which made choosing it again for our trip an easy decision. Unfortunately, this time the stay was far from perfect and didn’t quite live up to our previous memories.
The hotel’s location remains a strong point. Positioned in The Rocks, it offers easy access to the Harbour area, Circular Quay, and surrounding attractions — although it’s worth noting that the walk back from the Harbour is quite steep.
One of the undeniable highlights is the view. From the lounge, the outlook over Sydney Harbour and the Opera House is simply spectacular.
Our room, while comfortable and clean, felt fairly standard and nothing particularly special. The bed was comfortable enough for a good night’s sleep, but the overall feel lacked the wow factor we remembered from our previous stay.
The biggest disappointment was the lounge experience. In the evenings and at breakfast, it was overcrowded, with a busy, canteen-like atmosphere rather than the relaxed, premium environment we expected. During evening cocktails, children were running freely around the lounge.
Overall, while the views and location are still excellent, this return visit didn’t match our fantastic 2019 stay, leaving us disappointed.

Fabulous stay

Excellent location. Beautiful views. We had the club access which included food and drink at certain times. The butter smelt and tasted off. But apart from that it was lovely, staff were friendly and helpful and the hotel was very clean.
