Lovely homestay in Maun

We stayed one night at Jayla Homestay and it was excellent. We had two rooms, both spacious, comfortable, and clean. You can cook your own meals if you wish, or enjoy the menu they offer. The staff was extremely friendly and welcoming — not just in a host–guest way, but also by chatting and sharing experiences. There’s also a common area where you can relax or meet other travelers. Totally recommended!

WE'RE NOT STAYING

We booked at this B&B one night believing it would be humbling but pleasant. At the outset, the address is highly imprecise (no one knows it), as there is no street but a succession of dirt and sand roads (approx 1 km with many curves and turns) and without any advertising signs (we will never reserve an accommodation whose postal address is a PO Box). All this in the deep outskirts of Maun (several kilometers from the center) in some unsafe-looking fields and without any services in the vicinity. When we finally arrived (an hour of mistakes and many questions) our hopes fell through the floor because that looked very bad. There was almost no room to leave the car. The person who received us (very unkind, by the way) took us (for some strange verdicts) to a room located at the back of the estate (as a part of the rest) that did not comply at all with what we had reserved, because instead of a large bed had two singles, without air conditioning or fridge, with a depressing bathroom and in general, all old and grounded, giving the impression of a very low level of cleanliness. We told him to show us other options if possible better. Unwillingly took us to another room where there were 3 single beds spread across the room, with an equally old bathroom and no air conditioning or fridge. Seeing the daunting panorama, we asked him for the best room he had and he replied that he had another double (surely ours) but that it was occupied. The look of the facilities did not promise much comfort, so, considering that payment had to be made in cash and at that time, we told him that we were not staying and to cancel, without charge, the reservation. She didn’t seem to be too surprised by our decision (would she be used to it?) and we left there in search of a worthy accommodation to stay overnight, what we got in a nice looking resort (Mokoro Lodge) that offered us a conditioned apartment for twice the price of the Jayla Homestay, which we paid at ease as the change was like staying overnight. As soon as he had wifi, he sent an email to the reservation provider at the Jayla Homestay to cancel it without charge, which they did quickly.
