Only the first night here but the rooms are lovely and William the bartender was amazing - such a lovely guy and really made us feel welcome

The most disappointing hostel ever
The experience at Clown and Bard Hostel was extremely negative. Upon arrival, the owner spoke to us rudely and even threatened to call the police if we made any noise. Our room was on what was labeled the 4th floor, but due to the building’s layout it felt more like the 8th, making access with luggage very difficult.
The room itself was in unacceptable condition, with stains on the walls that appeared to be vomit and other marks. The bathroom was filthy—easily the dirtiest we have ever seen in any accommodation. We felt compelled to document everything with photos, as it seemed likely the owner might try to blame us for the damage.
The hostel is located on a very steep hill, making it extremely inconvenient to reach with bags. There were also concerning signs about theft, including a notice at the entrance saying “thief thief call police,” and the hostel took no responsibility for belongings even when left in locked rooms.
Additionally, the owner made it clear that even quiet music was not allowed and warned that breaking this rule would result in the police being called. Overall, the stay was stressful, uncomfortable, and far below acceptable standards.

We would, however, like to clarify several points. At no time did our staff threaten to call the police. Upon check-in, all guests are informed of our quiet hours and our three-strike policy, which is in place to ensure a comfortable stay for everyone. As explained, the police would only ever be contacted as a last resort if a guest repeatedly violated the house rules and refused to leave the property.
Our building does not have a lift, and the number of floors, as well as the property's hillside location, are clearly described on all major booking platforms so guests can make an informed decision before booking.
Regarding valuables, we provide free safe storage at reception. As stated in our terms and conditions, we cannot accept responsibility for personal belongings that are not deposited in the safe.
We also take cleanliness very seriously. Had any issues been reported during your stay, our team would have been happy to investigate and address them immediately.
We appreciate your feedback and wish you safe travels.

Assigned a dirty and already-used bed on arrival. When I reported it, the staff responded aggressively and refused a ref

I did not sleep in the bed and was denied a refund.

We would like to clarify that the claims in your review do not accurately reflect what happened. As soon as you reported the issue, our team checked the reservation system and immediately offered you a different bed. Unfortunately, during the discussion, your behaviour towards our staff became increasingly rude and aggressive. After repeated attempts to resolve the situation calmly, you were asked to leave the property and informed that the police would be contacted only if necessary.
We strive to treat all guests with respect and expect the same courtesy in return. While we regret that we could not reach a satisfactory resolution, we stand by the actions of our staff in handling the situation professionally.

Far from good
We spent 4 nights in this hostel in december 2024 and were super disappointed after our stay, going through stress with possibly having brought bed bugs back home.
-Firstly, on our second day we found 2 bedbugs in our room on our beds. Customer service regarding this incident was poor: We didn’t receive empathy from the hostel worker, and we found it really weird that no one acknowledged the situation further along our stay or when we checked out: it was like nothing had happened. Due to our financial situation we wouldn’t have been able to afford another accommodation, so we accepted to be moved to another room and didn’t encounter bedbugs there.
-There were a lot of spiders and their webs in the rooms and in the bathroom. Also there was a hole in the wall of one of the bathrooms which was interesting.
-Pillows and blankets were small and thin, barely covering our bodies.
-You have to walk up the hill to access the hostel from tram/bus stop, which can make it inaccessible for some people.
-One morning there was only freezing water coming from the showers, before the shower ran out of water completely.
-Hallways smell moldy, there clearly are signs of some kind of (water?) damage.
The price of our stay was really cheap, however tou should think twice about booking a room here. There are other hostels in the area that have similar prices.

As soon as you informed us, our team acted immediately by moving you to a different room to minimize the disruption to your stay. After your departure, both the original room and the room you were moved to were professionally inspected and treated by a licensed pest control company as a precaution. We take any report of this nature extremely seriously and follow strict protocols to ensure the safety and comfort of our guests.
Regarding the hot water, this was caused by an unexpected technical issue that occurred that morning. We understand how frustrating this was, and we're pleased to say the problem was resolved later that same day.
We also appreciate your comments about the other aspects of the property. Guest feedback is invaluable in helping us identify areas for improvement, and we will review these points with our team.
