My friend and I had an amazing stay at Al Salam Camp in Luxor. Ahmed, who runs the camp, was so welcoming to us and was a joy to talk to. He was always eager to answer any of our questions and give advice on the area. We booked a hot air balloon, taxi rides to temples and archaeological sites, bike rides and boat rides through Ahmed - he made all our dreams come true! The camp itself was cozy and beautifully decorated, and the food was delicious. Thank you Ahmed!

Surprise turned into a nightmare: my worst accommodation ever

The worst condition accommodation I have ever stayed at - and I've stayed in A LOT of places.
We arrived late in the night and ordered an airport pickup from the camp. It was probably the owner's friend, with a car full of construction tools and overall in bad shape. This cost more than an airport taxi from Booking.com (12€).
When we got in to our room, we were shocked. What was supposed to be a fun little surprise for my brother, travelling for the first time, turned out to be a nightmare. There was spiderweb all over, the ceiling fan has probably not been cleaned in years and we were afraid to accidentally turn it on to not spread the thick layer of dust all over the place. No hot water in the shower, barely warm, and the shower head holder was broken. Where there used to be reading lights for the beds, only electric wires stood out from wall. Beds were fairly uncomfortable, the mattresses tinted yellow and full of small holes, and only a thin bedsheet on top of this filthy frame mattress. Pillow was very big and uncomfortable. My brother hit his leg on the beds metallic frame several times, that is bigger than the mattress and hidden under the sheet, thus easy to mistake. One wall had big stains of some yellow liquid dripping from the AC. There was a small cabinet, but the surface was broken and inside was missing the shelves that used to be there.
I don't know why we didn't leave on the first day or ask to change the room. It's our Finnish nature not to complain about things (and then rant online - sorry!). But the fact that even one of not many rooms can exist in such condition tells a lot of the accom's standards.
Ahmed, the owner (?), was overall friendly to us, but tried every opportunity to make a bit more money out of us. Of course, he tried to sell us tours, and seemed a bit upset when we refused, but overall he didn't try to push us anything. Then, whether it was a misunderstanding or intentional, he asked me to pay for the stay in cash - only the next day I realised I paid already through Booking.com. He returned the money, but tried to offer a worse exchange rate for the USD-EGP conversion and round down the sum. Also earlier he offered to exchange money for us, but with a bad rate, of which he said that "it's the hotel rate".
Atmosphere on the yard was nice. Little birds chirping and flying around, nicely shaded seating and small library, and a photo album of Al Salam Camp's history. Seems like it had its glory days, but those are far gone.
Breakfast was a bit pricey compared to nearby restaurants, but decent. Omelette, bread, some dip for the bread, veggies, an orange and turkish coffee - for 4€ (250EGP). At least water bottle wasn't overpriced.
We sucked it up for a second, sleepless, night and even though we had a third night booked and paid it we ended up changing places. Finally some sleep.

Cozy place, highly recommended.

A cozy, calm and peaceful place. Ahmed is a very friendly host who knows a lot about Egypt and who makes everything possible for the guests, i.e. camel ride, feluka trip, balooning. One can rent a room in a self built house with own bathroom or a small basic hut with shared bathroom. Good breakfast. I can recommend the camp very much!

Owner was aggressive and violent and was arrested during out stay

We had a bad experience with the hostel owner, Ahmed. He overbooked and told us there was no longer a room for our Egyptian friend for the first night, told us conflicting information, and was very rude to our friend on the phone. On our first night, he messed up with the rooms and gave us a different room from the one we booked, and we had to share a very small double bed instead of having a bed each. Of course, mistakes happen, and people get stressed, and he had been kind and friendly with us, so we gave him the benefit of the doubt, which was a big mistake. It got a lot worse. He was very aggressive and violent towards us (two women staying in the camp) and our friend (a man who had to stay elsewhere) after we tried to calmly talk to him about some issues we had with an excursion he organised for us with a hot air balloon. He'd misled us on pricing and also on what the excursion would include, and we wanted to understand what had happened. After yelling in our faces, continually trying to physically remove our friend from the camp, hitting and pushing us in the process, and picking up a big piece of wood to threaten us, we paid him his money and left as quickly as we could for a neighbouring guest house. He was then arrested, and we had to spend 5 hours of our last day in the police station giving statements.

Cosy place away from the hustle of downtown Luxor

After several years, I came back to Ahmed's Al Salam Camp. It is a charming little camp with older individual huts with shared bathrooms and some new rooms with private bathrooms. The atmosphere is very pleasant, it is easy to meet other guests in the courtyard, and Ahmed is the perfect host – friendly, open minded and helpful. And he is a good cook. He makes you feel home away from home. I heard about some difficult times with a challenging long-term guest, but those days are over. Staying at Al Salam Camp is once again highly recommended.
