Cheerful and well located.

We slept at the Hostal, in the night between the excursion to the Cotopaxi National Park and the one to the Quilotoa lagoon.
It is an informal environment, with rooms of different sizes and shared bathrooms, housed in a building right in the centre.
A little noisy and very busy, it is however cheerful and provides a lot of tourist information. It has a beautiful roof terrace from which you can see the city.
Great for a short stop.

Cheap/mediocre, it’ll do?

This seems to be the place that tourist/backpackers stay in Latacunga, and we’re not sure what other options exist, but it was pretty mediocre even for a cheap hostel. The young people (like, potentially teenagers) who were seemingly running the place were not at the front desk when we arrived - said they would be five minutes, came back after twenty with churros. We don’t really care too much about that stuff but the room was basic, the bed uncomfortable, and we agree with some other reviews that it seemed cheap to charge for a water bottle fill-up. Breakfast was fine and the women making it were great - made us hot/fresh eggs, otherwise some fruit and a croissant. It was cheap - 35 bucks for a couple with a private room and bathroom, so you pay for what you get. They do seem to have good information in English about the Quilotoa trek and Cotopaxi adventures, and you can leave your bags here for a small fee (we didn’t but many did).

Friendly, clean, charming!

In my opinion, Hostal Tiana is the best place for travellers in Latacunga. Free storage of luggage, extremely helpful staff, fun and funky decor, sweet cafe - an overall excellent experience!! Great spot!

Good value, great place to start & end Quilotoa Loop

A nice spacious hostel with a well-equipped kitchen. Staff were knowledgeable about Latacunga, the Quilotoa Loop, Cotopaxi and more. Lockers are available at a good price for leaving bags before doing the loop. The breakfast was simple but decent and the rooms are comfortable. Overall great value.

Avoid

Cafe Tiana is just ok, but avoid it if you can.
1) worst bedding we’ve had in our 2-3 months trip in South America:
- the pillows were really not ok, we are not fussy, but these were like a cut off block of bad foam, the most uncomfortable I think I’ve ever experienced.
- the sheet was for a small bed instead of a double bed
- the undersheet was constantly coming off, leaving us on the raw mattress.
2) laundry service was a rip off. I think the hostel milks the fact that many travellers are desperate for laundry before starting the 3-day Quilotoa loop, so they charge $2.5 a kilo which is about a dollar more than what we’ve previously experienced. Also they don’t fold your laundry, which is ok in theory but every other cheaper places we’ve been had folded it (our clothes came totally tangled up). Seems quite outrageous to pay $17.5 to have our clothes put from bag to washing machine to dryer straight back into bag.
3) breakfast was the “least good” we’ve had in our trip. Even cheaper places we’ve been to (throughout Colombia and Ecuador), have always had eggs, at least some fruit salad and/or some yoghurt and granola. Cafe Tiana will offer you 2 croissants style bread (quite yummy) but with a jam that is really cheap (pure sugar with no fruit taste), a banana and a really cheap juice (again super sweet with a vague taste of pineapple). Really poor compared to other hostals.
4) bathroom was dirty. We may have been unlucky on this one (ie a dirty guest happened to use the bathroom right before us), but we’ve experienced a blocked sink filled with clipped hair, and a toilet blocked with poo.
5) they make you pay 50cents to refill your 1L water bottle. Other places we’ve been to offer free drinking water, given tap water is not safe in Ecuador.
So really, avoid it, plenty of better options out there.
