so greedy, so miser

pros: very good location next to the palace, welcome drink, good breakfast on a terrace overlooking the view although everything served is measured out stingily.
cons: almost everything in the room not in order, no hot water, very weak water pressure, no shampoo, only one small soap for 2 persons, very basic facilities, rooms must be renovated.

Avoid Lodge Du Chateau by any cost!

When I planned to travel from the States to Ethiopia to visit my family and show my favorite destinations to my wife and her mother, I reached out to Simon and booked Lodge Du Chateau.
Initially, Simon was very friendly and kind to my family and me. I paid for only a few days in advance, and he told me I could pay the remaining balance when we arrived in Ethiopia. I didn't realize this was a sneaky trap until later.
Long story short, we arrived in Gondar. He immediately offered the most expensive shuttle service to pick us up from the airport to the lodge. Since I lived in Gondar and know the city well, I politely refused his price. That was the beginning of him becoming a bit grumpy. He then offered us his tour, but the price was much higher than other tours, and I refused again. Also, I told him that since I lived in Gondar for years, our plan at this time was not to take any tour but to visit the city by ourselves. He became visibly frustrated because we refused his tour again.
The lodge's location is close to the castles and is great, but be ready to wake up at 9:00 am to a loud noise and have it continue until sunrise (it is the nature of the city and nothing to do with this lodge). This lodge has a great garden, and the breakfast service is nice. However, the room was super disgusting; it felt like an abandoned place, with a stinky bathroom, a dimmed, wet floor, leaking pipes, and old blankets.
His staff members were very friendly but seemed terrified of Simon.
On the second day, I kindly asked him to finalize the remaining payment, which he had previously said I could pay in cash. When I presented the Ethiopian Birr, his eyes popped out. Simon yelled at me and demanded to be paid in U.S. dollars, and then left.
I was so confused. I spoke to his staff members, telling them I would pay using that day's official bank exchange rate, as I don't carry foreign currency when I travel. At the beginning, I was patient and even felt guilty for not paying him in dollars, and thought about how I would get cash (I hate traveling with cash). However, his staff later told me that Simon only accepts foreign currency, and I later learned that he is heavily involved in the black market, which is illegal in Ethiopia and elsewhere. Later, I realized that since my wife and her mother are white, he was upset that I was standing in his way of taking advantage of foreigners.
After a day and a half of negotiation, I paid an extra amount in Birr, but Simon still refused to speak to me. He became a stranger and ignored his own guests for several days. One of his staff members later became a trusted friend, like a brother, and we still call each other. I've learned many details about Simon's abusive behavior from him (I won't detail this here, but be aware).
Finally, Simon insulted me via WhatsApp text and ruined my day (I still can't believe he did that). If he isn't taking advantage of you and your money, he is a super grumpy person, and I didn't let him take advantage of me. I strongly recommend staying in a better place with a much better price.
Wishing you a safe and wonderful trip to Gondar!

Simon's lodge

The always smiling Simon was exceptional. He is really passionate and did everything possible to make me have a memorable stay. Little touches like welcome tea, hearty lunch from the terrace overlooking the mountains, walk with me to show me the city, visit the market, offer me an itinerary to maximize my experience. He is recognized and appreciated in the community, even took the time to calmly explain to the children why they should not shout "money, money". As an independent traveller, I have been inspired by his suggestions and I am convinced that my stay in Gondar has been much richer culturally and humanly than just visiting heritage sites.
The room is simple but comfortable, ideally located close to the castles.
Simon inspired me with confidence and I felt safe during my stay, even taking advantage to leave for half a day in the mountains.
For me, staying at the Lodge and meeting Simon made my stay in Gondar one of the highlights of my trip.
Note that the castles are under renovation, but the scaffolding has been removed and they are beautiful.
Of course being downtown surrounded by churches means you will hear the prayers on the speaker, but if I had wanted an anonymous beige room with no cultural change of scenery, I would have gone to Niagara Falls rather than Ethiopia.

Even though the staff (not the owner) of the hotel was nice and welcoming. The cleaning ladies, gatekeepers, receptionist, made their best to make our stay great, they were helpful and took care of us. The garden inside and outside the place was pretty, the view from the terrace was nice, the breakfast was fine too. It is in front of the castle and not far from the center of the town...
It was only place in Ethiopia, we were regretting that we had stayed at.
I'm person who is really easy-going and even rough and simple conditions are fine for me, I had been a sort of vagabond traveller in the past. I am aware where I am travelling.
This time I really felt that somebody had ripped me off and I got into tourist trap. We had chosen the place because the rating and opinions were really great. But when we got there we were really disappointed it is not so superb, excellent as the other people suggested. The place completely didn't meet our expectations. The price (65 USD per night) was way too much! Especially in Ethiopia. It was the most expensive place we stayed in that country and in the same time it had the worst facilities from the places we visited. To compare: in other places we paid 25-30% of that price and we felt like royals in the palaces (10/10). The bathroom of our room in the Lodge du Chateau- was old, dark, small, smelling badly, and needed renovation. When we used the sink - the pipes were leaking, the toilet also didn't work properly - we had to repair the flushing system ourselves so we could use it in the night. The bed was old and hard, blankets were super old and heavy, sheets were really old too. The room we stayed was not quiet (we got the one next to the street, even if the other rooms were available), when there were prayers in the church in the night, we couldn't sleep as the walls were thin.
But probably the worst was that during all of our stay we had a strong feeling that something is wrong. I felt that the place was sort of "island for white tourists" in the town. We also kind of regret that we trusted the opinions and we chose that place to stay instead for finding one which is closer to the local community, and is hosting not only "white rich tourists" but also local people.
I had also impression that the staff of the place was really afraid of the owner of the place, that he was not so friendly and nice guy as he seemed to be or were presented in the comments of tourist who visited his place
As we talked with people outside the gates of Lodge Du Chateau, members of the community of Gondar, I realized that it was not only our feeling.
We exchanged some messages with Simon, but didn't meet him in Gondar. When he learnt that we were not planning to go to tours he was proposing as they were too expensive, he sort of lost an interest in us. After the experience we had at this place I realized that he was rather interested in our money, not us. His messages, which we got from him before coming to Ethiopia after making a booking, were not helping us to feel safe there, but raised that feeling of fear and stress.
Now after some time, I realize that he was his way to do marketing of his services. Reading in between lines: "You should go with me to a tour, so you can feel safe with me and my staff".
Just in a moment when we arrived to Ethiopia and talked with some good friends who we met there, we realized that the things for example about transportation between cities, which he told us were not true.
And yes, we told the staff about the loud rooms, broken toilet, blankets and so on... I always say about my needs immediately - I worked as a staff in the hotel once upon a time and I know that communication is key to success, I know how to be a good guest.
I also know that it is not fault of the staff when something doesn't work, but it is owner duty to maintain the place.
I am writing this honest opinion so others would not feel disappointed as we were and feel ripped-off.
