Located in Taveuni Island East, Garden Island Resort is on the beach. Lavena Coastal Walk and Matangi Dock are worth checking out if an activity is on the agenda, while those wishing to experience the area's natural beauty can explore Waitavala Natural Waterslide and Bouma National Heritage Park. Spend some time exploring the area's activities, including golfing. At Garden Island Resort, relax by an outdoor pool or hit the beach where you can enjoy snorkeling. Housekeeping is not available. Garden Island Resort offers 30 air-conditioned accommodations with DVD players and safes. Flat-screen televisions are featured in guestrooms. Refrigerators and coffee/tea makers are provided. Cribs/infant beds (complimentary) and rollaway/extra beds (surcharge) are also available. Recreational amenities at the resort include an outdoor pool. The recreational activities listed below are available either on site or nearby; fees may apply.

I'd go back in a heartbeat!
I had an amazing first stay at Garden Island Resort! The staff were so kind and attentive to my requests and fun to chat with. I had some technical issues with my own personal scuba gear I brought, and Pio (captain and dive guide) did an excellent job getting me back in the water. I have dived all over the Caribbean and Central America, but the quality of corals and marine life on Rainbow Reef took my breath away! The resort is also the closest to the sites, so all the boat rides were only ~15 min. The pool and dining area were the best place to chill after the dives, and the food was excellent! I also loved the fruit bats! Taveuni and the north of Fiji are definitely worth the visit!

Great Diving With Garden Island Resort!
I had an incredible stay at Garden Island Resort in Taveuni. The food was fantastic, and the dive staff was top-notch. Every member of the resort team made me feel right at home and took such good care of us. The restaurant and pool area was a fantastic place to relax between dives—and don’t skip the desserts! I can’t wait to come back!

The staff at Garden Island Resort are all so lovely and caring.
The gardens at the front of the building are beautiful.
The location is not great for snorkeling right from the resort though amazing diving and snorkelling is available close by.
The pool is directly underneath a cauldron of bats, not 1-2 bats but close to 100. The bats are screeching constantly throughout the day and there are bat droppings on the pool deck.
There are few close amenities and not much within walking distance.
No airport shuttle was provided despite being listed as an amenity.
This property appears to need some tender loving care. Our shower head did not work correctly and leaked, our ceiling fan did not work and our safe was not bolted down.

Has Deteriorated Over The Years With Major Issues Now
I have visited this place several times over the years, and it has deteriorated significantly. The main staff is friendly and very attentive, except for housekeeping. During my last stay, a couple of people had money stolen from their luggage while locked in their room during the last day, during lunch, when they knew everyone was away. Although some cash was left behind to avoid detection, those affected knew it been stolen because they had previously counted and set it aside as tips. This incident marred the end of our trip.
Wi-Fi is only available in the lobby and is very slow and spotty, so don’t count on it for work. However, the food quality has improved dramatically over the years, and meals are served three times a day, plus an afternoon Tea Time with snacks available. All drinks other than water are available for purchase, as well as French Fries and Pizza outside of meal times.
The rooms are pretty basic with beds, a couch, and a desk. No TV, but there is a mini fridge and plenty of outlets. Being in the tropics and the room not being completely sealed from the balcony, you can expect critters in your room. We had very tiny Ants, a couple of Geckos, a couple of Spiders and even one small Crab. It did not bother me at all, but something to expect. Only expect hot water outside the busy times.
The grounds are clean and pretty. All the trees between the resort and the waterfront are filled with Fijian Monkey Face Bats. They are super fun to watch, but there could be issues for some. Unlike most bats, these fly on and off all day and night. They also make combination bird and monkey sounds all day and night. You are also going to have to deal with some bat droppings in that area. It is not as bad as you would think, but some might not like it.
The actual diving spots are very good but have also slowly declined over the years, as have most places in the world. Some spots are still spectacular, and some you can see the decline even if you have never been there, and a couple are just awful. Overall, the diving itself is great, though.
As far as a Dive Shop,p there is no real Dive Shop. They have some, and I mean some, rental equipment, but it has seen much better days. Do not expect to go there and get good quality gear to rent for your trip or to purchase anything dive-related. There's no one on-site to mix Nitrox, so make sure they know you want Nitrox before you go.
The Dive Masters and Boat Captains are skilled, helpful, and work very hard with what they are given. They are, though, let down by the lack of an organized dive operation. There is no real leader who runs it all, other than the resort manager, who is not a diver. Thus, communication can sometimes be lacking, and there is no first aid or O2 on the boat. To get on the boat, you have to take a shuttle bus a mile down the road to a concrete ferry dock, which is not designed to handle smaller dive boats. Depending on the tide, it can be downright scary to get into and out of the boat. They used to have a nice boat dock on site, but did not repair it when it was damaged in 2016 by Cyclone Winston. If you have mobility issues of any kind, you will suffer with this setup.
I have traveled and been diving for many years, and it takes a lot to put me off. Most of the “issues” with this place I could easily handle, but the theft by the employees and the lack of a safe and organized dive operation are inexcusable.

That said, we do find your overall rating surprising given the many positives you outlined. We would also note that although your review was posted in January 2026, your stay occurred in November 2025—the same period as another guest who rated us 5/5. This reflects an important point: our resort experience is not intended to suit every traveler.
Garden Island is a remote, nature-focused destination. We prioritize authenticity, simplicity, and proximity to the natural environment over highly polished luxury amenities. Guests seeking a more conventional, high-end resort experience may find that a different destination better aligns with their expectations.
As with all properties on Taveuni, certain limitations—such as island-wide Wi-Fi reliability—are outside of any one resort’s control. Many of our guests instead value the opportunity to disconnect and fully experience the island.
Our accommodations are intentionally simple, yet spacious and comfortable, with immediate access to the ocean and surrounding scenery. We do acknowledge that the building itself is showing its age in places; however, the rooms are well maintained and designed for comfort. In a tropical, open-air setting, some interaction with local wildlife is part of the experience.
Yes, we have a colony of fruit bats. Yes, they can be noisy and occasionally messy. If you do not love and have an appreciation for nature, they may not appeal to you. We consider ourselves very fortunate to host them, as they are a vulnerable and threatened species. While other properties actively drive them away, we choose to protect them and provide a safe habitat. They play an important role in Fiji’s ecosystem, and we stand firmly by that commitment.
We would also like to address the allegation of theft. We take such matters extremely seriously. However, no incidents of this nature were reported to management during your stay. We always encourage guests to raise any concerns immediately so they can be properly investigated and resolved.
With respect to diving, guest safety remains a top priority. Emergency oxygen and first aid equipment are standard on our boats, and our team is trained accordingly. We regret if this was not visible or clearly communicated. While access via the public jetty—following damage from Cyclone Winston—can be less convenient than our former private dock, our staff are always present to assist guests safely. We are also proud to be the closest resort to Rainbow Reef, with most dive sites just a short boat ride away—typically under 15 minutes—allowing our guests to spend more time diving and relaxing, and less time in transit.
Our dive shop reflects the realities of operating in a remote location. While it may differ from large-scale or retail-focused dive centers, it is supported by a skilled and dedicated team. Travel to more remote destinations often comes with differences in infrastructure, and for some travelers, a more traditional resort setting may be preferable. Perhaps traveling off the beaten path is not for you.
