Clean, Ideally Located, and Overall Great Hostel!

An awesome hostel and probably one of, if not the best one I’ve ever stayed in! Dorm accommodations feature a lot of privacy as the beds are separated by solid partitions that are basically walls, bathrooms are separated by gender and are super clean, kitchen and common space is perfect, host is super communicative and helpful (taxis, recommendations, moped/car rental assistance, etc.), and location is perfect! Smaller size also makes for nice community feel given two private bungalows and 6 dorm beds total. Host speaks primarily French but English is solid so fear not. HIGHLY RECOMMEND!

Excellent for backpackers

I really enjoyed this place and the way it is organized for both backpackers and small families or ppl needing a private space. The kitchen and common spaces are perfect for staying autonomous and enjoying social exchange at the same time. Also the host was super attentive and offered a lot good information to be able to move around the island and meet the nice spots. I’d definitively stay there for a longer period of time.

This is the best place to stay in Moorea.

I had the great pleasure and luck to spend 6 days at this lovely backpacker....
Firstly I would like to say that is like to stay at home due to the comfort and cosiness we get .
It is located in s very strategic position of the island, close to the fantastic Tropical garden.The Painapaopao has fantastic separated and very comfortable small bedroom where you can enjoy privasy and silence.
The bathroom is do close you have showers and toilet so near so this means extra comfort and you will not have to walk outside to reach it.
The kitchen is immaculate, big and extremely very equipped so that you can enjoy in full cooking.
the common area has also some books, games and precious fliers and information guide you can use as well as a very comfortable amaca right outside.
I recommend really everyone who's intended to visit Moorea to defenetly consider this option and I promise you will not regret.
One more word is for the lady who runs the place, She is the very big asset as she is so lively and spare not efforts in helping you whatever is needed.
For any excursions, it is very wise to ask her and she will give you the best options.
Can't wait to go back .....

Good spot to explore the island from and meet other travelers

This is a relatively new, botique-ish backpacker hostel with two bungalows and a six-bed dorm, to my knowledge the only genuine backpacker hostel on Mo'orea. The location is great for exploring the most popular (and populated) area of the island, including Cook's Bay, the "Pineapple Road" and the Belvedere lookout. The kitchen was reasonably equipped and quite clean, the communal area makes for a great hangout and place for meeting others, and from what I've seen, the dorm is brilliant, almost like little rooms you have to yourself.
Since no dorm beds were available when we booked, we stayed in one of the bungalows, which was clean, if quite small (the bathroom, on the other hand, is quite generous). In terms of value for money, you probably can't beat the cozy dorm - the bungalows, on the other hand, are a relatively average price for what you get. Certainly no rip-off by Mo'orea's expensive standards, but the place we'd stayed before was a more spacious two-bedroom bungalow with its own kitchen, and had cost less.
Overall, a positive experience, but the best value for money is probably the dorms.

Best Budget Option in Moorea

This hostel is amazing and is especially good value for French Polynesia. The dormitories are essentially individual rooms - they just have curtains in place of a door and an open roof. Each dorm "room" has a safe for your valuables (although this isn't really necessary in most of French Polynesia), a fan (although it cools down nicely at night, at least in June), a lamp, an outlet for charging, and the wifi was strong enough for me to use it in bed.
The kitchen has a good number of burners and plenty of pots, pans and dishes for all cooking needs (my only minor quibble would be that you can't count on oil and salt being stocked). It's a nice open concept so you can cook but still socialize with everyone whether they're cooking or just hanging out in hammocks. The bathrooms are extremely clean and although they're shared, they're also in individual rooms so you get perfect privacy while showering.
With regards to location, there's no getting around that Moorea is a big enough island that you either need a vehicle to properly explore it (I rented a scooter one day) or you're going to need to hitchhike your way around (which worked fine for me the rest). With that said, PainoPaopao Backpackers is about as "central" as you can get - it's right between the two bays which means it's not too far to the Belvedere or to any of the beaches.
One of my favourite hostels I've ever stayed at.
