My worst hotel experience
I am 54 years old and I have just had the worst hotel experience of my life. Worse than a room that reeks of stale tobacco in a run-down roadside motel.
How is this possible? When you claim to sell a dream, you avoid having the experience turn into a nightmare.
The short version: a lot of displayed pretension, but when a problem arises: amateurism, disastrous management, and, in the end, the customer paying for a mistake that is not their own.
The long version:
First day of vacation. On our way to Quiberon from Belgium, we stopped in Angers to visit the Château d'Angers before heading back out. For this first evening, we treated ourselves: a night in a castle, with a pool, just to start the vacation off nicely.
Once we arrived, we parked in a parking lot a bit far from the hotel; fine, the castle is there and my daughter has a big smile on her face at the sight of the pool.
We arrived at the reception: no one.
We waited.
The person who would turn out to be the receptionist walked by in the distance the first time without even glancing at us. She walked back the other way a few moments later and this time said to us: "I'll be with you in a moment."
She walked by once with a ball, once with a deck of cards, then had a brief chat with a colleague before finally taking care of us.
We were then subjected to a questionnaire about our trip, a presentation of the region, the city, dining options, the area around the castle, and the castle itself. It was so long and inappropriate after 435 miles of driving that my wife's initial smile had completely disappeared and mine was nothing more than polite.
Finally, on the way to the room.
Once in front of the door: no key...
My patience is suffering, but it isn't breaking.
So here is the receptionist back, with a surprised look, who says to us:
"But there are three of you!!!" "This room is for two."
Yes. There are three of us.
And above all, our Trip.com reservation is indeed confirmed for 2 adults and 1 child. We neither added our child along the way, nor failed to declare him: the reservation was made and paid for three people.
Back to the front desk to check.
For us, there is no doubt: we have a written confirmation for two adults and one child.
I'll keep it short here, but basically, it will be:
"We only have a reservation for two."
"You will have to pay €20 more for the child."
"No, actually, it's €40."
"We don't have a room for three."
"We don't have an extra bed."
And finally:
"You can pay double to get a second room."
So, let's summarize: we booked and paid for a room for 2 adults and 1 child, but the room assigned to us can only accommodate two people. The establishment has no suitable room available, no extra bed, and no solution to honor our booking.
The only "solution" proposed consists of paying for a second room.
Even for free, I do not want a second room. We are a family with one child, not two groups of travelers who would want to sleep separately.
We booked via Trip.com. The platform released the payment the day before; since the establishment is unable to provide us with the booked service, I am therefore very logically asking to be refunded.
Phone call to the manager.
And there, to my great surprise, we are entitled to:
"It's not our fault, so no: we are not issuing a refund."
So this is the moment when a booking error, which is perfectly possible and excusable after all, turns in my eyes into totally unacceptable business management.
Whether the error comes from Trip.com, the Château des Forges, a computer setting, or a transmission problem between the two changes nothing about an extremely simple fact:
I, for my part, did not make any mistake.
I indicated 2 adults and 1 child.
My booking for 2 adults and 1 child was accepted.
It was paid for.
And upon my arrival, the service corresponding to this booking could not be provided to me.
I am sorry, but the business relations between the Château des Forges and Trip.com do not concern me. If the error comes from Trip.com, let the Château des Forges then turn against Trip.com. It is not up to the customer to finance the malfunction between two professionals.
And certainly not by keeping the price of a room that we were unable to use.
Result: two exasperated parents and a child deeply disappointed to see the pool we had promised them disappear.
And we obviously had to look for another accommodation solution, even though we had already paid for this one.
We had chosen this place precisely to treat ourselves to a nice "appetizer" for our first night of vacation. We left with exactly the opposite: the feeling of having been deprived of a quiet evening, moments of relaxation by the pool and, above all, our money.
A booking error can happen.
An IT problem can happen.
A problem between a hotel and a booking platform can happen.
What makes all the difference is the way a professional reacts when faced with it.
Here, no solution to honor our reservation, no equivalent alternative, no real acceptance of responsibility and, to top it all off, a refusal to refund a service that the establishment was unable to provide to us under the booked conditions.
Le Château des Forges considers that Trip.com is responsible.
Trip.com, for its part, is not refunding us either.
And in the middle of this magnificent game of ping-pong between professionals, there remains only one loser: the customer, who booked correctly, paid correctly and who finds themselves without a room and without their money.
The dream sold on paper will therefore have lasted only until the front desk.
For us, it turned into a nightmare without even having crossed the threshold of the room.
** English Summary **
I am 54 years old and have just had the worst hotel experience of my life.
This was supposed to be the pleasant beginning of our family holiday: after driving 700 km from Belgium on our way to Quiberon, we had booked a night in a château near Angers, with a swimming pool, as a special treat for ourselves and our daughter.
Instead, after a surprisingly long and disorganised check-in, we were eventually taken to our room — only for the receptionist to suddenly realise that there were three of us. We had, however, booked and received confirmation for two adults and one child months earlier through Trip.com.
What followed was astonishing. First we were told that we would have to pay an additional €20 for our child. Then €40. Then we were told that there was no room for three people and no extra bed available. The proposed “solution” was for us to pay twice as much and take a second room — separating our family on the very first night of our holiday.
We declined.
As the hotel was unable to provide the accommodation we had booked and paid for, I asked for a refund. After contacting the manager, we were told that the problem was “not their fault” and that they therefore would not refund us.
That is where a simple booking problem became, in my opinion, completely unacceptable.
Mistakes happen. Computer problems happen. What distinguishes a professional establishment is the way it deals with those problems. We had paid for accommodation for two adults and one child. The hotel could not provide it. Who was responsible for the booking error should have been a matter for the hotel and Trip.com to resolve between themselves — not something the customer should have to pay for.
The result: two exasperated parents, a deeply disappointed child who had been looking forward to the swimming pool, and the unpleasant feeling that we had lost not only the relaxing first evening of our holiday, but also our money.
The dream advertised on paper lasted only as far as the reception desk. We never even made it through the door of our room.

Breakfast is the star! Asking us how early we can leave not so good...
Negatives: Having to wait for our room even though we arrived after 4pm and then, as soon, as we closed the door and started unpacking, having a manager knocking on our door asking us how early we were leaving in the morning as workmen were arriving! Which didn't make us feel very welcome!
