Exploring our future home

Didn't even get there because of the rail strike. Helene at maison Charles Maurice was so kind and helpful. I am so disappointed that I didn't get to meet her. I will be back because Chalais is where I am planning to live.

Shabby Chic, or should that be cheek?

Lovely old building, clean if rather dusty-looking room, very comfortable bed. Okay for an overnight stay, but would be cramped for a longer sojourn. Despite putting our time of arrival on the booking form (19.00-200 hours) there was nobody in when we arrived at 19.15. We tried calling the number on the booking form and on the outside of the building (which was the same) but this was clearly no longer current. We entered the building, calling out but no luck. Fortunately, another guest arrived who had the owner's mobile number, but unfortunately this only went to voicemail. By now we were tired, hungry and thirsty and just wanted to get to our room after a long day travelling and a dash to catch our train connection at Angouleme. Thanks to the persistence of the guest, Madame did finally appear. She shook our hands amiably but there was no apology. Instead she said that as we had put the time of arrival as between 19.00 and 20.00 hours she had gone to run an errand. We struggled with the logic of this and were left wondering why she could not have left us a note to that effect. We were amazed to be asked (before we had even got to our room) what time we were leaving the next morning!! A bit cheeky. Having shown us to the first room at the top of the stairs (obviously all the others were empty) she disappeared without telling us the password for the WIFI system, which would have been very useful indeed. We combed all the leaflets downstairs for this information, to no avail. Lovely to have a kettle in the room, but the lead was so short it had to be used on the floor. Sweet little cups accompanied it, but they were very small. There was only one tooth mug and the shower leaked all over the floor. Beautiful building, but not well converted into a hotel.

More than welcome....

A perfect suite for two adults and two children; clean, modern and a pleasure to stay in. all amenities for self catering, but breakfast 'hotel style' was our preference.
Helene was more than helpful and made us feel so relaxed and at home.
Cannot recommend this hotel enough. easy parking, fantastic stair case!!!
