The perfect choice for Eat-Sleep-Dive-Repeat!

Arjen helped us put together a bespoke 7-night dive & stay package at Utila Lodge for our first visit to the Bay Islands. From the moment we checked in at our over-water accommodation it was obvious this was going to be a trip to remember.
The food was excellent, if you're diving definitely take the breakfast & lunch option as it can be a quick turnaround. And don't miss Taco Tuesday!!
We did three dives per day, and also slotted in a night dive; logging nurse sharks, stingrays, barracuda and a host of other Caribbean critters.
Our dive guide for the duration was Elisa, and she set the perfect pace, looking after everything for us, above & below water.
A great experience to mark my 1,000th dive, with a surprise certificate below the surface and a scrumptious home-made cake waiting on dry land!
We'd love to come back to Utila and wouldn't stay anywhere else.

Rustic no frills lodge in perfect convenient location

We booked 4 nights at the lodge while doing a course at the Dive College next door. We upgraded from the dorms and apartments offered, thinking it would be a nicer more quiet experience after reading about the noisy street and younger guests. We didn’t have the all inclusive package with our stay because we were taking a course. The College and all its staff are absolutely top notch and incredibly friendly, accommodating and knowledgeable. Shout out to Sebastian for being the best DM we’ve had over a couple hundred guided dives around the world. Here’s some pros and cons we encountered:
Pros:
Location of Lodge is smack dab in the center of town where you can walk 5 minutes and try 10 different restaurants
Room is just a couple footsteps from the dive boat and gear room so no lugging your stuff far
The over the water balcony adjacent to the room was so peaceful and even with the doors closed we fell asleep to the sound of waves. No street noise whatsoever, and let me say the Main Street in Utila is noisy. Best nights sleep ever!
Food for the daily specials was really good and affordable. Great spicy shrimp tacos on Tuesday and drink specials.
Plenty of outdoor seating on the dock to hang out
The water around the dock had some nice tropical fish and a resident octopus named Ramon who we stalked everyday.
Cons:
For $100/night I was really expecting a better room. It was tired, not enough hooks or places to dry your stuff and just no frills. A mini fridge, electric kettle and beach towels would go a long way. For an island that is trying to be more eco friendly, swapping out the mini and single use soaps for dispensers would also be an easy fix.
Breakfast was supposed to be included in the room price, but that doesn’t cover coffee which really should be in a large carafe free of charge like every other hotel. Charge for the speciality coffees.
While the rest of staff other times of day were really delightful, Kathy in the morning shift was surly and dismissive with zero customer service to anyone. Sorry but for $100 a night on vacation I don’t want to feel like I’m just inconveniencing the staff by asking for coffee before an early morning dive, or god forbid ask for milk in it. We are about as low key, easy to please travelers you can get, but man she was just awful and we tried hard to win her over. Whether it was just not placing food orders at all, breakfast taking 45 mins because our order wasn’t put in timely so we had to rush to the dive boat, to waiting 15 minutes just to get a coffee while she played on her phone it was always something every morning. Had we stayed longer I just would’ve gone to a restaurant next door for breakfast instead. Everyone has an off day, but this was every day and while there was only us or 2-3 customers in the restaurant all having the same experience.
Overall Utila is pretty loud, chaotic with tons of scooters and the beaches have a lot of trash just like Roatan. You aren’t going to come here for the picture perfect family beach vacation but it’s definitely a great place to pursue some continuing dive education and a better price than home.

MUST VISIT!

While this place is mostly marketed as a dive resort (we’re not divers) make sure you visit for their food as well!! We went for Taco Tuesday and tried one of each. Get there early for the sunset; taco specials start at 6:30! Absolutely phenomenal! Must try!!!

Excellent stay and diving on this beautiful island!

Utila Lodge is a unique place. Built from an old fishing camp, it has the nostalgic feel and atmosphere of an old motel from the 1960s.
The place is pretty much all-inclusive, with the exception of sodas, coffees and alcoholic beverages. It includes three very good meals per day, your diving (3 dives per day, which may include a night dive depending on how long you're staying).
They pick you up at the ferry station in a golf cart (very close to the hotel, but you definitely would NOT want to try to roll your luggage and gear down the "main" street) and deliver your luggage to the room. We then met with Arjan, the manager, who briefed us on the schedules, the rules, the meal times, had us sign waivers, checked our diving credentials and was an all-around nice guy and a great resource of information about the resort and the island as a whole. Arjan is Dutch and is married to a local gal who is a dentist.
He'll also explain why a place with only 8 guest rooms is so bustling with activity. The Utila College of Diving is located at the resort as is a research organization. So there are students doing a semester abroad, people taking everything from open water certifications to tech diving courses to those doing their IDC and researchers there doing research-y things. I believe there are dorms above the main building or something as I saw a lot of them coming and going there. It's still not a crowded place, though, just don't be surprised if there are a lot of young enthusiastic people around...that was kind of fun.
There's also a decompression chamber on site with a dive doctor. That is a pretty amazing thing to have right there on such a small island.
The students and researchers eat buffet style and communally. We were assigned a reserved table and had set meals. I don't eat fish or seafood and they had no problem at all accommodating my preferences. The food was plentiful and very, very good. All of the waiters (I'm talking to you Sly and Caesar) and staff everywhere were spectacular (with one exception I don't necessarily feel the need to expound on, she may have just been having a bad week and I don't want to rat anyone out).
I had been to Utila for diving about 24 years prior to this trip, back when they had no electricity on the island other than generators and there were no paved roads (I use the term paved roads loosely...they're very narrow and only golf carts, four wheelers and scooters/motorcycles, etc. are on the island. I think we did see one very tiny little van, but the roads aren't built for that...and there are no sidewalks, so be VERY careful. We rented a golf cart on our last day to drive around the island. It's easy to do and fun. You really can't get too lost and there are some pretty cool sites to see. The island is small, the population (around 4000 people) is very close knit...everyone knows everyone. One of the dive guides on Roatan grew up in Utila and told me that if you did something bad on one end of the island, by the time you got home, word of your deed had already reached your Mom, who was waiting to tan your hide when you walked in the door. I also didn't encounter the dreaded sand flies they have everywhere in Roatan. There were the usual mosquitos at the usual times of sunrise and sunset, but the rest of the time they weren't bad. I just wear my DEET and they leave me be. (Unlike those nasty bugger sand fleas, which ate me ALIVE on Roatan and bit me relentlessly even though I practically bathed in insect repellent, but I digress).
The diving was just amazing. I've been diving for 30+ years and have dove in almost every ocean or sea in the world, including almost every Caribbean island. Utila's diving is now what I consider to be up there among the very best in the Caribbean. The corals are in pretty good shape in spite of the warm water: much less bleaching than I've seen elsewhere, and the fish populations and variety are much better than almost everywhere else in the Caribbean and Atlantic in spite of the lionfish invasion. I think that their encouraging the responsible use of lionfish hunting in Honduras has paid off versus, for example, Bonaire's incredibly difficult and arcane lionfish hunting restrictions which have caused (IMO) huge decreases in the fish populations and species varieties over the past 15 years.
Once you take your gear to the boat the first day and show them how you want it set up, you never have to deal with it again for the rest of your trip. Your dive guide will set it up, change your tanks, take it at the end of each day and rinse it and store it in a locked dive locker. I'm very particular about my gear and our dive guide took fantastic care of it. He never screwed up the configuration and he set it up exactly as I wanted it every time.
The dive boats are roomy and modern. Some days the three of us had the boat all to ourselves. Some days there were students or researchers on the boat with us. The captains they use are very good, personable and knowledgeable. Entry is via giant stride and exit is via a nice wide, sturdy ladder. If you can't board the boat with your gear on (if you're older or have back or knee problems, for example), they will let you remove it in the water and they'll put it on the boat for you.
BTW, air is provided as part of your package, but Nitrox is extra. I can't remember how much extra, but it was reasonable. The Nitrox percentages were always consistently 31-32% and the fills were right around 3k each dive.
Our dives were never rushed. All three of us are very experienced and excellent on air consumption. Once our dive guide figured out that our breathing rate wasn't going to be an issue, he didn't worry about that anymore. We almost always dove for somewhere between 60 and 75 minutes without a problem and then did our safety stop. He quickly assessed our level of comfort and ability and wasn't on top of us every minute of the dive (some dive guides still feel the need to "mother" you no matter what).
Now for our dive guide. His name is Jim. He's only been a dive instructor for a few years, but he is great. SO personable and friendly and helpful. He and his wife Missy are building a house here (they took us out to see it...it's so cool) and they guided us around the island on the afternoon we wandered around. He would often stay and have meals with us and was just generally an all-around great guy. Fish ID isn't his forté (yet), but his enthusiasm and love of the sea and diving more than make up for that. He made the whole trip effortless and relaxed. I can't say enough good things about him (and Missy). He worked his butt off for us and gave us 120% every day.
I honestly loved this entire trip. I love the atmosphere at Utila Dive Lodge and can't wait to come back.

Worth a stay!!

A very nice experience. All staff including lodge staff and dive crews were very nice and helpful. Shout out to the boat captain "Gringo" as he went out of his way to provide as smooth dive trips as possible. Braeden, Jim, Julia and Sebastian were great leading the dives. Katherine in the lodge made sure my dietary needs were taken care of. I would strongly recommend Utila Lodge for any scuba divers. Rebecca and Argen are very personable and friendly managers. All staff work very hard to provide the best experience possible. The different divers all came together and enjoyed each other's company
