Disaster
We contacted the Hotel Belveder months in advance to inquire if arrival at night was possible. It was stated that it was fine, just to inform them beforehand. We had contact on the day of arrival regarding the exact address, thinking we would arrive at 11:30 PM, and the address was communicated to us.
Unfortunately, due to heavy traffic, we only arrived at 1 AM, which I communicated again around 11 PM. When we finally arrived, exhausted after almost 9 hours of driving, there was no landlord in sight. Knocking 15 times, calling, and even emailing, he was no longer reachable. Since it was already 2 AM and one cannot knock anywhere at that hour to get a room, we then drove home after being awake for about 24 hours. It is incomprehensible how one can act like this; we love Croatia, and we have never encountered anything like this before. We received the 100 Euro deposit back after several requests!! In our opinion, this is the worst experience we have ever had. A disgrace for the beautiful Croatia that we love so much.

Left in Hours, Lost €1000 – Best Decision Ever
Here's what we were met with:
The elevator didn’t work.
At first, the staff said it was working. But when we asked them to try it themselves—nothing happened. Then a janitor was called, who also insisted it worked... until someone asked: “But does it open?” That’s when the truth finally came out: No, it doesn’t actually work.
It was as if nobody wanted to take responsibility, and instead they gaslighted both us and each other. They seemed to believe that if they say something works, tastes good, or looks fine—we’re supposed to accept that, even when the reality clearly says otherwise.
No air conditioning in the room.
We arrived in the middle of a heatwave with two kids, and the AC was completely non-functional. When we brought it up, the response was: “It worked yesterday.” As if that somehow made the unbearable heat more tolerable today?
We sat for a long time in the stifling room, sweating, waiting for someone to come fix it—but no solution ever came. Again, the same pattern: avoiding responsibility instead of solving the problem.
Their “solution”? We could move to another room for one night, and then move back the next day. This would have meant repacking and relocating twice during a five-day stay, while still not knowing if the issue would come back. It wasn’t a solution—it was a way of pushing the problem forward and hoping we’d settle.
No lighting in the bathroom.
The bathroom was pitch dark. Their excuse? You guessed it: “It worked yesterday.” We had to use a phone flashlight so our daughter could use the toilet in the dark.
The food was awful.
We ordered pasta bolognese and “pasta with meat”—both were overcooked, tasted old, and felt like they had been frozen for days. Genuinely unappetizing and impossible to eat.
A disgusting smell in the room.
Every time we opened the door, we were met by a mix of trash and old fish. Unbearable.
The building was falling apart.
Everywhere we looked: rusty AC units hanging from each room, cracked walls, rusty railings, decaying facades. Even the hotel’s star rating sign was covered in rust—a sad symbol of the complete lack of care and maintenance.
The beaches nearby were among the worst we’ve seen in Croatia.
We tried to rebook
Due to wildfires in the south, we just wanted to stay for two nights and move on. The hotel claimed Expedia doesn’t allow refunds. Expedia told us the hotel could refund if they wanted. Guess who “couldn’t do anything”?
We gave up
Not after several days—but after just a few hours.
We had time to check in, suffer through one dreadful meal, go through all the problems—and watch our children get more and more tired, sweaty, and uncomfortable, with nowhere to rest.
Instead of starting our holiday peacefully, we found ourselves in a room where nothing worked, no one helped, and every request was met with excuses or denial.
It became painfully clear that nothing here was designed to benefit the guests. From the staff’s attitude to the state of the facilities, it was all part of a culture where the priority isn’t caring for visitors—but maintaining a facade. A place where problems are brushed under the rug, and the guest’s experience is dismissed instead of respected.
My wife, who has never refused food while traveling, couldn’t take a single bite of the hotel’s meal. That says it all.
We packed up, left the hotel—and the money—behind, and headed to Zadar to salvage what was left of our vacation.
For just a few more EUR, we got a 100-times better stay in Zadar: a luxury apartment with a clean pool, a beautiful beach, and our own jacuzzi.
Don’t make the same mistake we did—especially if you’re traveling with children.
Conclusion:
We’ve road-tripped through Croatia, Slovenia, Bosnia, Austria, France, and Italy. We’ve stayed in everything from simple guesthouses to high-end hotels.
This was the worst accommodation we’ve ever had.
I’m writing this review so that no one else has to go through what we did.
Don’t be fooled by the pictures. Don’t be tempted by a low price or a nice view.
If you value working basic comforts, safety, honesty, and a stress-free vacation, do not book this hotel.

The elevator didn’t work (despite staff insisting it did), the AC was broken during a heatwave with two kids, and the bathroom had no light. The staff kept saying “It worked yesterday” instead of fixing the problems. We were offered to change rooms for one night, then move back – not a real solution. The food was awful, with overcooked, stale pasta, and the room smelled like garbage and old fish. The building was run-down, with rust, cracks, and neglected maintenance everywhere.
We tried to shorten our stay due to nearby fires, but the hotel blamed Expedia, while Expedia said it was up to the hotel. No one took responsibility.
After just a few hours, we gave up, packed our things, and left – €1000 lost, but the right decision. The online photos are misleading; the reality was the worst stay we’ve had across Croatia, Slovenia, Bosnia, Austria, France, and Italy.
The hotel looks charming online, but in reality it felt like an abandoned construction site. Nothing worked, and the staff hid behind excuses and policies. Even the hotel’s rust-covered star sign symbolized the neglect. A place built on appearances, not guest care.
For a few more EUR we got a 100-times better stay in Zadar with luxury apartment, clean pool, nice beach and own jacuzzi. Don’t make the same mistake we did, especially with kids.
