Time of my life
I gave this resort four stars although objectively speaking it is not in the range of 4 star resorts. During my 3 weeks stay there ( yes 3 weeks ) i got pretty much emotionally attached to basically every corner, plant and lizard there.
The staff was practically my family, they were hospitable, gentle, always smiling, ready to help. The only problem I faced, which will later on be the main trouble everywhere in Asia i went, were the sheets for which I thought were not regularly cleaned. The point is, that people literally wash their sheets and clothes in rivers without detergent, therefore the stains and questionable hygene. Oh and my bathtub drain was blocked so i had troubles bathing.
But all these things were put on ignore mode, because of the peaceful and green surroundings, very nice ambient, and quietness wherever I was. It is a bit away from the city centre, but worth visiting. It was practically my second home. Don't get scared if you get an unexpected guest in form of a lizard that decided to crash for a night or two in your room. After all, you are in the jungle area :-)

Good for a family but staff need to improve English
We loved the swimming pool, our villa was big (two bathrooms, and spacious bedrooms), nice decoration and air-condition.
We did not use the kitchen as it was dirty, Staff need to improve English language specially Restaurant staff; the only one able to communicate in English was the main chef (but he only worked in the mornings); we needed a special meal request and it was a bit difficult to talk to anyone.
This is a mainly Muslim city therefore be aware you will be woken up at 4:30am due to their praying.

Lovely place
The place is really beautyfull and interesting. It has a lovely garden and also some private swimmingpool. There are also some romantic corner where you can use the wifi. The only bad thing is that room are not really clean. There are lots of lizard, but them keep away spiders and mosquitos, so don't be scared! I would love to come here again.

Love the villa and the garden
I stayed here with my family for 3 days 2 nights. I rented one villa and 3 standard rooms. Distance from the parking area to our rooms is too far and not suitable when you carry a trolley or luggage, except you bring only backpack. Because they have many stairways to go.
Pondok Gajah is located far away from the downtown of Yogya, but if you look for stillness then this one is suitable for you.
This hotel surrounded by beautiful garden and lot of Budha statues.
I love to stay in the villa, because it come with kitchen, dining room and family area with Javanese interior.
For the standard room i think it was okay. They don't provide spring bed with white linen like others hotel. And the bathroom was dissappointed. I think they should repair our shower and faucet because the water came out irregularly.

Overwhelmed by mothballs.
Unfortunately we were booked in for 3 weeks in a 3 bedroom villa but only stayed 1 night. Upon arrival I did not get the welcome feeling that I normally experience in the 28 years I have been travelling here. The villa could have been very nice but the overwhelming smell of moth balls in every room had the children and myself feeling very ill, with sore throat, stinging eyes and headache. My husband collected a huge bag of mothballs from all of the drawers and put it outside but nothing would get rid of the smell. Our lounge area just had a very hard wooden seat so nowhere to relax and the kids felt quite spooked and wouldn't sleep in their own rooms - so all 4 of us slept in the same bed. Breakfast was a plate of nasi goreng (fried rice) with an egg and no other options were provided.
Unfortunately we had paid a $200 deposit for the 3 week stay, but after some chasing around did get $90 back, so better than nothing.
