Good experience

Kurokawa Onsen is a gorgeous little village and this ryokan is located right in the middle of it.
The staff were super helpful and spoke great English. Given the location and experience, the value for money at £240pn was not bad at all, but this is not a luxury ryokan.
The food was not bad at all, with fairly standard Kyushu ryokan fare. The horse sashimi was an interesting addition.
We probably made a mistake by booking a room in the annex, which is over the road from the main building. Access to this is through as very unappealing car park and every time you go to your room you feel like you are entering the service area / storeroom - this could definitely be improved on.
The varied private onsens are great, especially the standing one. The public onsen, right by the river, is superb. The bridge that takes you to this part of the ryokan is also super atmospheric.

Quaint little town. Hotel staff was friendly and helpful. We enjoyed the many private onsens, possibly 8 in the annex building. A public male and female separated onsens in the main building. Our family of 5 stayed in the Yuri room, annex building made up of 2 rooms with 2 beds, pull out sofa and 2 futons comfortably. Our room has a private onsen as well. My 3 kids enjoyed wearing the yukata to go try out the private onsens by themselves. Our kaiseki dinner and breakfast were delicious and plentiful. The bamboo views and snow flurries views from the onsen made it a very memorable visit.

Excellent service. Originally we did not manage to get the river view room. But then after that the Taiwanese lady managed to change the room for us on the second night.
Food was really good and we could even see fireflies at night along the river.
They had many private baths where the whole family can bathe in private.

We were served by mandarin speaking staff from Taiwan! This has helped tremendously with the experience in ryokan. Food was great. The area has limited parking space and the staff will help the traveller to park the car nicely at designated area nearby

The hotel is located at the centre of 黑川溫泉區, which is quite rural so highly recommended to go by car.
The service is excellent! The staff helped us to park the car and take the luggages up the stairs to our Japanese style family room.
We have ordered full board package and both meals are gorgeous.
There are many onsens in the hotel which are non-reserved and private, allowing family to enjoy onsen together. One drawback is that there are many stairs so elderly might have to take it into consideration.
