The host is adorable and gave us lots of advice. A Ryokan well in its setting. The Korean Madam Sun restaurant is next door and delicious.
You can dine in the room. A kettle at the entrance also allows you to make noodles. The host prepared them for my son. Arigato

Be informed before you book
This is a very modest hotel. The information provided on its site or other booking sites is not comprehensive so below is key information you need to have in order to make an informed decision.
You can't drop off your luggage inside the hotel before check-in, however there are large lockers right outside the front door that you can store your bags, lock it up and go explore. We fit 2 carry-on roller bags, 2 duffle bags and a backpack no problem.
When you check in, the owner (who is really lovely) will take the time to show you the key sites to see on a couple of maps, and recommend restaurants and activities. We appreciated that very much.
The rooms are a good size with plenty of room for storing luggage and hanging up clothes.
The rooms do not have bathrooms or showers or sinks. The communal sink (with a counter) is in the hall, the toilet around the corner.
You shower in the small one person onsen which is downstairs near the lobby area. The shower is the traditional onsen shower you may have seen at other onsens. The men and women are separate and only one person is allowed in at one time.
The hallway is a bit noisy. You can hear all the goings on but inside the room is quiet. However, you can hear the street noise (a few fast, noisy drivers late at night). There are no curtains, just the Japanese style paper sliding window shades so you will experience the dawn's early light. Wear a sleep eye mask. The futons and pillows were very comfortable.
There is a 9 or 9:30 curfew. Did not matter to us but it may to you.
The bathroom situation was not disclosed anywhere we had looked. Had we known, we would have chosen somewhere else. Having said that, there wasn't a wait at any time so it worked out. But generally, communal baths, toilets and sinks are a hard no for me.
Having said that, Hakone hotels can be very very expensive so this is a good value and it's run by a very hospitable, friendly person who is charming and helpful.
There is a 7/11 very close by for coffee. There is a good pastry shop across the street, but it has dreadful coffee.
We purchased it all and brought it back to the dining room in the lobby and the owner provided us with plates and silverware to use.

Absolutely Avoid – Dishonest and Unprofessional Behaviour
We had a terrible experience with this property. We initially spoke with the owner and were explicitly told we could check in late (around 8:00 PM), as we were spending the day in the mountains. Despite this agreement, at 7:15 PM we received a cancellation notice from Booking.com, citing a "no show" and both dates were cancelled.
When we returned to the property, the owner refused to speak with us. Shockingly, a neighbour informed us he was sitting on the balcony laughing at us. We waited over an hour trying to resolve the issue but were completely ignored and forced to find alternative accommodation that night.
I came back the next morning to ask why our booking was cancelled. At first, he spoke to me, but once he noticed I was recording (for our protection), he began shouting, refused any refund, and called the police.
We’ve since discovered this isn’t an isolated incident – several other reviews have described similar behaviour. Be warned: this man is a liar, a cheat, and a thief. Save yourself the stress and stay far away from this place.

Abhorrent owner
The owner is threatening. Late because we had a transportation problem. The owner threatened to call the police if we dared to come to his establishment. Unheard of for a hotel and yet we travel a lot. When you behave like this, you don't do a job where you welcome people.

Myojokan recently opened a restaurant - try it!
While we were the only guests, late on a quiet sunday night, we were most welcome. The stad was friendly and the food was fantastic. Great value for money, we highly recommend it!
Tip: order the edamame for starters and the curry or salmon as main dish.
