We really enjoyed our stay 2 nights and the Onsen was perfectly hot lovely staff very comfortable great place to rest those weary legs.

Avoid!

The rooms were tired, run down and nothing like the photos. But what I can’t deal with is dirt. They weren’t just dirty they were filthy especially the bathroom. The staff were rude and one tried to throw me out when I brought down the photos from the website and told him they didn’t match the room. Rooms were freezing and heater didn’t work so eventually they brought a gas heater that we wouldn’t leave in during the night due to the smell of fumes. The food was good but the couldn’t accommodate my husband’s allergies although we did tell them at 3pm when we dropped off our bags. Seriously would avoid this place. Worst hotel we’ve stayed in whilst in Japan. Literally cannot wait to leave! Avoid

Amazing stay at the Yamadaya, the staff were amazing, Great location in the hills of Hakone. The dinner and breakfast were amazing traditional Japanese dishes, so tasty.
The view from the room in the morning was lovely.

Great experience

I really enjoyed my stay. It was a great experience with a traditional Japanese room, yukatas, and traditional meals.
I wasn't blown away with the flavours of the dinner, but I loved having all the different things to try. The beef hotpot was good and the sashimi was delicious. I expected to not enjoy the breakfast, but I really did. It was very tasty and had lots of different elements. I loved it.
The staff were very attentive and reactive, and prices for drinks were reasonable. I can recommend the plum saki.
Finally, the onsen was wonderful. I was a little afraid, but managed to find times in the evening and morning when I could enjoy them alone. I was able to try 2 different ones as they swap the men's and women's at different times. They don't seem busy as there is one for men and one for women on each floor. There are indoor large onsens and smaller tubs on open air balconies. The amenities and toiletries in the onsen are really good, and the water left me feeling so relaxed and soft. It was truly magical to soak in the tub and look out over the mountains.

Everything about this place is subpar and extremely disappointing, the room is worn and tatty (stains on the walls and doors, wall and ceiling falling apart) and is absolutely freezing (it took 3 heaters to get it up to temperature) when we told the staff about this, one member said ‘why don’t you leave now then’, instead of trying to resolve the situation. The bathroom also smells of sewage and the floors are dirty. Again we told the staff about this and they refused to look and said it wasn’t dirty without proper inspection.
