Like stepping back in time
This hotel is like stepping back in time.
We truly enjoyed our stay, even though it was only for one night.
The room we stayed in was located in what used to be the storehouse of a samurai castle. It was an enormous two-story suite.
The renovation is exceptional, with carefully preserved historical features and thoughtfully selected period details throughout. Every decorative element and even the tableware perfectly matched the atmosphere. The room was spotlessly clean, the craftsmanship and attention to detail were outstanding, and everything was finished to the highest standard.
The private onsen-style bath was a unique and memorable experience.
The service was exceptional from start to finish. The staff were warm, attentive, and provided hospitality of the highest standard.
Dinner at the adjacent restaurant was outstanding. Every course was even better than the last.
The only minor drawback was that there is no bathroom on the sleeping floor. If you need to get up during the night, you have to be careful of the low wooden beams.

Fabulous
It is an exceptional experience that we have had. Everything is perfect: the large house with an upstairs bedroom featuring very good bedding, a very pleasant living room with a typically Japanese ambiance. Quality materials. As for the dinner to breakfast service, everything is delicious. A cuisine that preserves the flavors and where one goes from discovery to discovery. Simply fabulous

An Unforgettable Stay in the Heart of Kakunodate
We stayed at Wanoi Kakunodate for three nights in December 2025 and it was, without a doubt, one of the most unique and memorable accommodation experiences we’ve ever had.
The concept itself is something really special — staying in beautifully restored traditional kura (storehouses) scattered throughout Kakunodate’s historic samurai district. Each building has its own story, and the level of care taken in the renovation is simply exquisite. Our storehouse felt like stepping back in time, with thoughtful design elements that reflect its original purpose, while still offering modern comforts like heating, a luxurious bathroom, and all the amenities you could need.
We absolutely loved soaking in the history — from the traditional materials and furnishings to the quiet atmosphere of the town itself.
The experience is incredibly private and immersive. Having an entire storehouse to yourselves makes it feel less like a hotel stay and more like living in a piece of history. Every detail adds to that sense of authenticity and calm.
What truly made our stay, though, was the staff. They were exceptional — warm, attentive, and genuinely invested in making our experience special. Nothing was too much trouble, and they went out of their way to ensure we felt welcome and comfortable throughout our stay.
If you’re looking for something beyond the usual hotel experience — something immersive, peaceful, and deeply connected to Japanese history and culture — Wanoi Kakunodate is absolutely worth it. We would return in a heartbeat.

OMG! Absolutely fantastic! This place really is really original, wonderfully designed and equipped. Also the fact I was there in the middle of winter and all the snow around made it even more romantic and mysterious. Comfort, design and great customer service. I was met at the station and also got a ride to Samurai museum! If you look for romantic gateway and historic atmosphere - it's something for you.
