Authentic Japanese stay in nature – with host from thousands

We enjoyed the beautiful Shimanto Riverside Hideaway for a few days. This traditional Japanese house has been maintained with great care: clean, stylish and fully furnished in Japanese style. A lovely place to really unwind.
We travelled by train to Shimanto, a comfortable way to discover the south of Japan. The last part to the Hideaway we did by taxi – doable and well worth it for the peace and beauty of the place.
Kenji, the owner, is incredibly welcoming and passionate. He will help you with everything – from restaurant tips to day trips. One day he even personally took us to Cape Ashizuri. Along the way we stopped on a secluded sandy beach where turtles nest, tasted the famous katsuobushi – dried and smoked fish chips of bonito (skipjack tuna), which are a specialty in this region. A unique experience!
Shimanto Town is a 15-minute drive away and is a charming town. We were lucky enough to experience the traditional summer festival on 26 July 2025: a colourful parade with decorated cars, music, big drums, song and dance. Lovely!
In and around the house you can borrow bikes (ideal for nature), sail on the river or even go whale watching (although unfortunately the weather threw a spanner in our works). Alternatively, we visited the dragonfly museum – small, but interesting.
In short: Are you looking for peace, nature, tradition and Warm Welcoming in Southwestern Japan? Then Shimanto Riverside Hideaway is an absolute must.

Great host, very helpful. We stayed for 1 night during May. The cabin was very spacious and had some lovely touches, upstairs screen to stream from, free tea and coffee. The cabin is a detached building separate from the main building that has the shared bathroom in. The cabin also has no sink or toilet you have to also go into the main building which is not really clear in the description. Also be aware when booking that access to the property is via a sunken bridge (no sides or barriers) over the Shimanto River which we had to drive across after heavy rainfall.

古い日本家屋の為独特のカビ臭さがある。お風呂にお湯を張ると濁っており、流石に入ることを止めた。ホストの方はとても人当たりが良く素晴らしい。夜は居間に巨大なムカデが登場し驚いた。
