We arrived 6 hours before checkin to leave our luggage and head to the snow monkey park and they were kind enough to drive us right to the entrance , they have a pass so we didnt have to walk up from the bus stop like everyone else.

A unique rustic 100 year old ryokan experience

We chose this Ryokan for a "unique, rustic experience" and we definitely got it!
The place is run by a charming lady and her husband (who stayed behind the scenes). The husband's family has owned the ryokan for several generations.
They picked up our party of 10 from the train station in a small Nissan and a CRV. It took two trips. The place is over 100 years old. Our room had a phone with a dial and a VCR. You walk through an underground tunnel to get to the dining area which is in the adjacent building. The lady sees you off at the Ryokan building and by the time you get to the dining room, she is already there ready to serve you dinner! There are two different onsens which were ancient but enjoyable.
There are were so many funny, memorable things about this experience that made us laugh. I am glad we stayed here for that reason.

I had a wonderful stay at this authentic Japanese ryokan. The charm of the place lies in its simplicity and traditional feel. Though the ryokan is old, it has a timeless authenticity that makes the experience unique and memorable.
The host was incredibly friendly and accommodating, and it was a pleasant surprise that they could converse in English, which made communication effortless.
One of the highlights was the meals. Both dinner and breakfast were simple but absolutely delicious, showcasing the essence of home-cooked Japanese cuisine. However, if you’re expecting an elaborate kaiseki meal, this might not be the place for you.
Overall, it’s excellent value for money, offering a genuine ryokan experience with warm hospitality and satisfying meals. Highly recommended for those seeking an authentic and unpretentious stay.

Yuko was lovely sadly property run down, food excellent, glad we did not have to use fire escape
