I had a comfortable, good-value Stay

In late January 2026, I stayed at this hotel during a one-night, two-day trip to the JAXA Tsukuba Space Center and the Metropolitan Area Outer Underground Discharge Channel. As the hotel is located in the mountains of Mt. Tsukuba, I originally wanted to book a plan that included both dinner and breakfast. However, dinner was not offered on the night of my stay, so I booked a room with breakfast only. The hotel stands quietly in a forest, one street south of the main road lined with many hot-spring inns near the entrance to Tsukuba Shrine. Check-in was efficient, and I was shown to my room without delay. Although the building is more than 40 years old, it is well maintained. The room itself was clean and spacious. After checking in around 5 p.m., I went to the large public bath, which I had entirely to myself. The bath area was clean and well kept. Before arriving at the hotel, I had picked up a boxed meal at a supermarket several kilometers away and ate it in my room. If you plan to stay without dinner, it’s important to know that nearby restaurants tend to close around 6 p.m., and the nearest supermarket is also several kilometers away. Unlike many traditional Japanese hot-spring inns, there were no local sweets or tea provided in the room. Also, instead of staff laying out the futons while guests are at dinner, guests are expected to make their own beds here. There is no staff at the front desk late at night or early in the morning. Although it’s unclear how fully the hotel is operating at present due to staffing shortages, it does have banquet halls, as well as a relatively spacious lobby on the first floor. Taken together, these points suggest the hotel is operating with fairly limited staffing. Breakfast was simple but sufficient. The room rate is reasonably priced and reflects these service arrangements. Basic amenities are provided, and I was told that a microwave is also available for guest use. As long as you understand these points in advance, this is a good value-for-money hotel, and I would be happy to stay here again if the opportunity arises.

A very nice onsen hotel with nice view and a shuttle ride can be arranged with hotel staff prior. super nice outdoor public bath too and nice breakfast spread too. Good to prepare to drive out more ideally if not prepare some snacks will be good

It was great experience, very friendly and attentive staff .
Hotel was spotless clean , onsen fantastic , great location.
We will come back in the winter.

Accommodation without meals the night before trekking on Mount Tsukuba

I stayed here for a night without meals the day before trekking Mt. Tsukuba.
The lobby, room, bath, etc. were all well-cleaned and I had a pleasant stay.
I would like to stay again if I have the opportunity.
As it is a night without meals, there are no reviews for the food.
I asked the hotel to let me park my car in preparation for trekking the next day and they agreed, but the elevation difference from the hotel to the trailhead is 400m and it takes 20 minutes on foot, so I parked in the paid parking lot for Tsukuba Shrine visitors (500 yen per visit).
If you are feeling energetic, please walk from the hotel.

Only hotel in Tsukuba with its own hot spring source

Tsukuba Onsen Hotel 筑波温泉ホテル is located at Mt. Tsukuba, one of Japan’s most famous mountains. During good weather, visitors can see the Kanto Plain, Mt. Fuji and the Sky Tree from here.
The hotel is a bit old, and there are not that many guests on the day of visit. As it is already very late, after putting our luggage inside our room, we immediately head to the restaurant 紫峰苑 for dinner.
I have ordered a bottle of local sake 男女川 純米無濾過 生貯蔵酒 at 1,050 yen (half bottle) to go with the meal. The brewery is actually located very close to the hotel.
The kaiseki dinner is actually quite nice, with a combination of dishes, featuring Japanese black wagyu cuisines including roasted beef and shabu shabu.
Chawanmushi.
As well as Sashimi.
The Dessert is a bit mediocre with two small pieces of cake and a quarter of kiwi.
Our room (Room 405) is of Japanese-Style type, 10-mat in size.
An interesting thing is that we have to open the bed by ourselves. The first time we have to do this in Japan.
The bathroom is very basic.
But there is still a bathtub in the shower room to relax if desired. However, the water is not hot spring.
As a result, I decide to go to the Public Bath. This hotel is the only one in Mt. Tsukuba with its own hot spring source. On the night there is no one, so I can enjoy the whole bath by myself. The hot spring water type is Simple.
Apart from the indoor bath, there is also open-air bath facing the trees, including a pot bath where one can submerge in a large urn. The fragrant breeze from the mountains is so soothing and comfortable, helping me to get a good sleep on the night.
Waking up to a beautiful day, we head to the same restaurant 紫峰苑 for our breakfast.
Again, the dishes are tasty and I enjoy them a lot. The salad is fresh and appetizing.
The tofu omelette is one of my favourites.
Grilled salmon.
Soft-boiled egg and natto.
Local vegetables including carrot and lotus roots.
Rice and seaweed soup.
Assorted pickles to go with the rice.
Fruit.
After breakfast we walk around the hotel, the reception and lobby is very quiet.
Some nice decorations at the lift lobby.
And we also find a public phone that is on turn-dial. Amazingly, it is still working. The total expense is 43,750 yen including the room, dinner and breakfast, onsen tax, and beverages. A decent stay which I give a score of 6.2 out of 10.
