Fantastic, best experience ever
Believe the reviews! What an amazing place, what an amazing experience. Simply the best place I have ever stayed. From the moment you are met by Lodge Manager Nina you are made to feel welcomed and special. The accommodations are fantastic, we were in room 6, truly beautiful and spacious. The staff are all wonderful, the food is superbe. The Safari ranger we had was Chatlene who was superbe. I literally had tears in my eyes when we left

An Unforgettable Escape into the Wild at Bayethe
My husband and I have just returned from our honeymoon/first year wedding anniversary all tied into one. We are struggling to find the words to describe how incredible our stay at Bayethe, Shamwari was. From the minute we arrived at the welcome lodge we were greeted by smiling friendly faces, our ranger, Sihle was the best we could ever have asked for, he is a fountain of knowledge, making every game drive feel like a masterclass in nature. We can’t thank Nina and her team enough for looking after us throughout our stay, nothing was too much trouble and they always went out of their way to make it the most memorable stay possible. Seeing the animals was breath-taking, but seeing the care they put into the conservation and their rehabilitation centre was a highlight, meeting Lisa was wonderful and it was so interesting to find out what goes on behind the scenes. The animal sightings, cuisine, views, and the staff made this a trip of a lifetime. If you are thinking about booking—do it. You won’t come home the same person.

Come for the wildlife stay for the staff
During our 4 nights at Bayethe my husband and I were blown away by the lodge, its surroundings, and its staff.
The highlights of our stay were our game drives with our ranger, Andre. We had high hopes for the drives but could not have imagined such a wonderful and experienced guide. Andre has years of experience tracking and knows the bush well. He was kind enough to share his knowledge with us across our six game drives. During those drives we had breathtaking encounters with flora and fauna alike. I’m hesitant to share the highlights of our stay because the best part of Andre’s careful guiding and adaptation to conditions is that you are constantly surprised by what the bush has in store. In addition to his ranger skill, Andre is a skilled host. He makes great coffee and sundowners. If you book a trip be sure to request Andre as your ranger; I’m sure you’ll love it as much as we did.
Bayethe was also lovely. The facilities are well appointed and in a peaceful location. We stayed in tent 3 and especially loved the outdoor shower and plunge pool (which was on the colder side but still usable even in August). Monkeys made several memorable visits to our balcony.
Bayethe’s real value though comes from its exceptional staff. From the moment we checked in Nina and her team made us feel welcome. They met us with hot drinks and warm cloths after each game drive and doted on us at meals (come hungry there’s lots of great food). Not only did staff remember our drinks orders but they even remembered the garnishes my husband liked in his gin and tonics. Other thoughtful touches included fireside dining on chilly August nights and lunch boxes for game drive snacks. And for my husband’s birthday they organized a special cake and song during the boma (the African barbecue night that occurs roughly every 3 nights). All the servers were great but we want to especially thank Francis, KK, Jean, Rena, Maureen, Maya, and Ntombi for their attentive service.
In short, our stay was nothing short of exceptional. I would call it a once in a lifetime experience but after spending four nights there I’m eager to return.

Amazing!
Can’t recommend Shamwari and the Bayethe lodge enough. Shamwari is a responsibly run private game reserve. Care is taken to ensure that the animals aren’t surrounded by multiple vehicles at the same time and we had some amazing animal encounters. Our ranger, Charlene, was just brilliant. The lodge itself provides the luxury/quality you would expect; it’s fantastic and make sure you go hungry because the food is wonderful and plentiful! But what makes this place truly special is the relaxed and warm welcome of all the staff. We took our young adult children with us and they were completely blown away by the whole experience. Thank you to everyone at the lodge for providing us with memories which will last a lifetime.

Exceeding Expectations!
Every holiday comes with expectations—whether for excitement, adventure, relaxation, or new experiences.
At Shamwari, we expected to see plenty of animals, enjoy good food, and unwind in comfortable accommodation.
Those expectations were far exceeded.
We stayed at Bayethe Lodge for five nights. Our ‘tent’ was more like a luxuriously appointed apartment—spacious, inviting, and tastefully decorated. The elegant bathroom featured both indoor and outdoor showers, while the comfortable living area and private outdoor space overlooked the mountains and bush. The included minibar and snacks were excellent, and the welcome gifts, including glass water bottles and a small toiletry bag, were a thoughtful touch.
The restaurant, where all meals were included, featured two inviting fireplaces, a bar, indoor and outdoor seating, and a BBQ area. The food was outstanding, with generous and delicious portions throughout our stay. In addition to the breakfast buffet, there were à la carte options. Lunch alternated between an à la carte menu and generous tapas, while dinner offered à la carte fine dining. The wines on offer were a beautiful mix of varietals and Pinotage became a quick favourite.
Game drives. We were placed in the very capable hands of Andre, whose knowledge of flora and fauna was extensive and his enthusiasm unequalled. Morning and Evening game drives were full of amazing facts about Shamwari, the care and treatment of the animals within the reserve and his own experiences as a Ranger. We passed many other game vehicles during our stay and the warm camaraderie was evident between all staff. We saw so many amazing sights on this trip, we’ve been asked by friends and family to name a favourite moment during our safari’s, and we simply can’t. Each day bought a new experience, a new sighting, a new appreciation for the wildlife of South Africa and we loved it all. If you’re fortunate enough to have Andre as your guide, your safari drives will be exceptional.
The staff of Shamwari are another element that made our stay unforgettable. Nina, Bayethe’s manager, was always present. Ready to help with any questions and arrange anything within her capability that you desired (Nina, keep onto management about those drive blankets! We would’ve bought one in a heartbeat if they were available to purchase). The restaurant staff, again. Where to begin? Thank you to Francis, Jean, Mauveen, Debbie, trainee Ziki, Maya, Chef Thamba, Chef Anele and Barman Sino and others whose names I may have missed. You truly made our trip perfect. Many thanks to behind the scenes staff too – from housekeeping to maintenance, without you Bayethe would not be as inviting and well maintained as it was.
