Great hotel, newly renovated, and great location. The balcony was a nice touch, and we could easily take the back way to the pool. Highly recommend this hotel

Renovated And Upgraded And Still Convenient
Having used a third-party booking service for my Halifax trip I soon discovered that I wasn’t staying where I thought I was. When booking the hotel I chose or at least thought I had chosen was the Delta. The Delta operated by Marriot was I thought down by the waterfront and really seemed nice with plenty of amenities, especially considering the rate I had gotten it for.
I was therefore surprised when the booking info came through and I noticed the address was 1990 Barrington. That was no where near where I thought my hotel was. That address also seemed familiar, and a quick Google search confirmed it was the Hotel Halifax attached to the Scotia Square mall.
Confused and not wanting to arrive in Halifax and step off the airport bus to discover I was homeless for the weekend; I decided to call the hotel. Hotels are at a premium in the city during the summer and I really didn’t relish phoning around to settle for some overpriced motel on the outskirts of town. One where I would be wasting money and more importantly time commuting to the downtown daily.
The phone call put my mind at ease. The old Hotel Halifax at 1990 was now the Delta, having been purchased by that chain since my last stay there several years earlier. They were also in the process of a rather significant remodelling and upgrading of the property. Finally and most importantly they had my reservation and were looking forward to my upcoming stay.
Ah well It hadn’t been a bad place back when I had stayed there. First and foremost it was conveniently located. The airport bus stopped only a few feet away and it was actually attached to the mall with interior access to the shops inside. Besides it was downtown and an easy walk to everything I needed.
The room back then had been fine and there had been a pool. They had also noted that part of the upgrades included safes in the rooms, a feature that had been lacking during my last stay there.
Check in was quick and easy, mind it was middle of the day on a week day and I’m sure they got busier on weekends. Later on I was to discover that I was actually a member of the Marriot rewards group when I tried to activate my free WIFI.
As it was after 3:00pm the room was ready and I was issued my electronic key cards left a $150.00 deposit on my credit card for incidentals and headed to my room. The $150.00 was refunded on check out as per normal. As I was handed my keys I was told I had been upgraded, although to be honest having not stayed there since the new ownership and renovations I had nothing to compare my room to.
The room 164 was on the first floor, one up from the lobby and in the eastern wing near the pool. There was a small patio section with a couple of chairs and a table. This patio appeared to be on the roof of what I presume was the parking garage for the mall. One could walk around the wing on it and access other rooms via their patios but there was no outside access.
There were two queen beds and the one I used was firm and there was plenty of pillows comforters etc.
Instead of an actual enclosed closet there was a large open structure with shelves below and a pipes with hangers on them against one wall. There were plenty of hangers on the pipe. There were only two drawers and one was almost filled by the large electronic safe. The other though was enough for my stuff.
Beside this was a desk and chair with a mini fridge under and a coffee maker and cups and glasses. There was an iron by the shelves and a small glass bottle for water that could be refilled from the water stations in the halls.
There were several electrical outlets including one on the bedside table between the beds making overnight charging of phones easy. Mounted on the wall opposite was a large flat screen TV with numerous local and cable channels available. It was also a smart TV with streaming services like YouTube preloaded.
The bathroom was newly renovated and well laid out There was a glass enclosed shower stall with two rainfall showerheads. I had no issues with either hot water or water pressure at anytime during our stay. There was an ample supply of towels, and toiletries including shower gel, shampoo, and conditioner in dispensers.
There was maid service but not sure if it was daily as they came only twice during my four-night stay. Mind I may have left the do not disturb sign on the door. Towels and linens were in ample supply and were changed as needed.
The pool was close by and I used it a few times. In the same area was a well-equipped gym. There was a sauna advertised but I neve saw it, although renovations in that area were ongoing so it may not be ready. Sadly, there was still no jacuzzi yet which would have been a nice addition.
There was a restaurant and bar off the lobby and a small coffee stand as well, although with all the other options nearby I never made use of them. There also appeared to be a business centre and convention rooms. I mentioned water refill stations in the halls but never saw that hallmark of hotels an ice machine.
Security is pretty tight. The main doors locked at 9:00pm and access was by key card only. Access to the rooms by elevator also required key cards.
Check out was easy and my deposit was refunded by the time I arrived back in Toronto. Had I not an airport drive arranged there was a luggage storage room for those with later flights.

This hotel is walking distance to attractions & restaurants plus the wharf area. Great location! Facility is updated, very clean & amenities were easily available. After long days we were happy to enjoy the restaurant/ bar area. Tasty seafood chowder & salads! Great restaurant staff!

The front desk staff were super helpful. I couldn’t ask for better. They were very accommodating with anything we asked for. But the cleaning staff was slow; our room wasn't serviced two of the four days we stayed. The pool area was not very clean and looked old. I didn’t feel safe letting my daughter swim in it. The hotel looked like it was just renovated but the carpet in the hallway smells like wet dog. The hotel was in a great location it just needs some better maintenance.

Our overall experience was very good although I have to be honest I didn’t like the idea of paying for additional parking $27 per night using the parking lot not even using the garage.
