Never again, a total disaster!!!

I was here 30 years ago and had very good memories of the hostel with modern washrooms and good beds. This time we were there as a family in a private room, which was the disaster. The bathroom is at least 60 years old and was dirty upon arrival. Our room was located directly above the smoking area, so either breathe marijuana or sweat. A loud motor or generator was running the whole time; it was impossible to sleep! 2 hours after our arrival, we found a note on our door - like all the other new arrivals too - with the notice that the room would be searched the next day. Where have I ended up?? In prison? In the military? Home for troubled youth? We are a family, what do you think you will find - drugs, bodies under the bed??? I am a guest here and on vacation! And I booked a private room to have privacy! A search is humiliating and degrading. Besides, everything is very noisy due to loud doors, everything very uncomfortable. Urgent need for renovation throughout the house including the kitchen. No TV available is fine, but reading without light even in a private room is impossible. The beach is likely the only reason why people stay here. But every tent is nicer than that. Absolutely not recommended, not even as a hostel!!!!

Great place

The HI Vancouver Jericho beach Hostel is a Great place, they have great staff and it is really affordable.
They also have great tours for the area

Loud and shabby

We stayed at the HI Jericho Beach for three nights and if we had known what to expect, we would have booked something else. First the positive: it's cheap, the bathrooms are cleaned several times a day and you can park nearby for free, which is not a given in Vancouver.
Now the negative: the beds are a total disaster. Ancient squeaking metal beds with paper-thin mattresses through which you can feel every strut, coupled with lousy duvets and pillows. We stayed in hostels on our trip, and before, but nowhere were the beds as bad. The building is extremely thin and heavy. Coupled with the rattling doors, this creates an extremely annoying background noise. As far as the furnishings go, they are otherwise functional, but the distribution of the sockets and light switches is a bad joke. Apparently they were rolled out by dice (there's a lamp on the table but no socket for it!). After this sobering experience, we decided not to book anything like that again. We definitely cannot recommend the hostel.

Not a very nice stay

Stayed here for 4 nights and it was not a good experience. Separated from my friend who was on the same booking when we got there and staff were not willing to work around this. The dorm had no plugs near the beds and the one that was in the same dorm didn't work well, any plug you put into the wall it just fell out. plugs available in communal areas but these were always busy. 6 sockets available in the bathroom but only 1 works. Bathroom was full of flies. Only 1 big light in the whole dormitory therefore if 1 person wants the light on/off then everyone is affected. Personal lighting and a plug by beds is recommended for vast improvement. Kitchen was spacious but not the cleanest and fridges always full to the brim so unable to use it half the time. Stayed in other HI hostels in Canada for similar prices and these were vastly better than this one. Big parking lot available out front but not free. If free parking is required you have to park further down the road. There are easy fixes this place could make to improve the experience.
