A wonderful place to stay

We stayed for four nights in July at La Maison du Lao Shay in Dali. The hostel was a bit difficult to find if you catch the number 8 bus from Xia Guan. A better option is to catch the bus to the Three Pagodas and get off at the vegetable market, which is much less walking.
The room was spotlessly clean with a lovely bathroom. There was a living area downstairs as well as a large outdoor courtyard.
Even though it is a youth hostel it is suitable for all ages, but the staircase, high step up into the bathroom and deep bath may be problematic for some travelers.

Okay hostel, little spoken English

The garden at the hostel is great to sit at and the breakfast they serve is really delicious and cheap. But they speak a little English and for a hostel tahy dont give any information about the area. They only have squat toilets which is also a downside.

not good value

I stayed there in the winter, it was cold, the air con wasn't working well. The single room was rather large and comfortable though. But far too expensive for this standard. The place, big and empty, had no atmosphere. I've been to cheaper and better places in China...

Not a bad place to spend a few nights

We stayed here for two nights during our trip to Dali and it was quite a nice place. We rented a double room and had a big bed (though it was quite hard) as well as an excellent bathtub. Loved the bathtub -- got rid of all our chills at the end of a long day hiking around the mountains. The room had a cute feeling, a bit like a French boutique, which we liked. It was really quiet while we were there - but that didn't bother us. It's on the outskirts of the ancient city which we liked as when we walked down to the main streets (ie Renmin Lu) we had the opportunity to walk through some local areas and try local food as well. The staff was quiet nice to us, particularly the boss, a very kind and clearly hardworking man. The only complaint I would have is that we rented bicycles for a day to ride down to Erhai Lake. We were quoted 30 rmb, then 20 rmb, and then were told they were included in the price. The price didn't really matter so much, but the bikes themselves were horrible -- rusted, one had a broken bell, another broken gears, and very uncomfortable. Perhaps better to borrow from somewhere else, or encourage the staff to take better care of the bikes. Other than that though, a good place to spend a few days.

This place gets it right

Good location at the outskirts of Dali Old Town. Friendly, relaxed service. Bright rooms with the best pillows I've ever used. Spacious.
Our family of four booked a triple bed room for a reasonable rate and have no regrets.
Only drawback? No air-con.
Recommended especially for families.
