For the second leg of my Hainan birthday trip, I stayed at the Mandarin Oriental Sanya. I booked a Guestroom with Courtyard-View, hoping for a luxurious and relaxing experience.
The location is stunning—surrounded by lush greenery and overlooking the South China Sea. It’s a bit secluded, which adds to the tranquility, but the hotel offers shuttle services to nearby attractions.
From the moment I arrived, the service was impeccable. The staff greeted me with a warm welcome. The check-in process was seamless, and the staff were exceptionally friendly.
We had to wait by the cafe as our room wasn't ready despite requesting for an early check in. in advance. However, they surprised me with a birthday setup in the room, complete with decorations and a cake!
The room itself was stunning—spacious, beautifully designed, and stocked with high-quality toiletries, including full-sized lotion, bath salts and a Dyson hairdryer. The complimentary mini-bar with fruits and drinks was a lovely touch, and I appreciated the free photoshoot service around the resort.
The in-house food was excellent, especially the breakfast spread, which featured lobster wonton and an assortment of pastries. The resort also offered a shuttle service to the city center, which was convenient.
However, there were a few downsides. The air conditioner was weak, so we ended up sleeping with the terrace open. The pools weren’t as clean as I expected—there were leaves and insects floating on the cool pool and sand in the heated pool. The checkout process was painfully slow, causing us to miss our train back to Haikou. Additionally, the lobby toilet were shockingly dirty, which was disappointing for a hotel of this caliber.
Overall, for the price, I expected better maintenance and management. But I would say that it's on par with most resort around the world.

Snorkeling directly on a coral reef was great. The food was way too expensive so very few seemed to eat at the hotel and ordered food in. The breakfast buffet was top notch!

Absolutely amazing experience at the MO! From the moment you arrive (and before even, when I called ahead,) the level of service is nothing short of excellent! Every single member of staff is polite, helpful, kind and really goes above and beyond!
I had everything I needed and more, and at every step I was made to feel welcome. A few absolute shining lights: Alex at check in who was kind enough to upgrade my room to an Ocean View King, Nicky, Chloe and Ryan at the Sunset Bar were absolutely wonderful - and my poolside dining experience was beyond incredible! Caroline at Fresh (superb dining with the best view) Nick and Dennis at the pool bringing water, snacks and being very patient with my requests for the umbrella to be put up and down. Sunny at breakfast for a very warm welcome.
Honestly - I’ve never had an experience like this - the attention to detail, the care, the kindness were just all excellent.
The rooms are very comfortable and all amenities are provided for. The fruit plate was replenished and was so thoughtfully and beautifully presented.
There are three pools to choose from, all idyllic. I ate at Fresh and the Sunset Bar, and both were amazing. The cocktails at the Sunset Bar are sublime! The breakfast is divine - definitely something for everyone: there are so many choices!
The only slightly disappointing part was that swimming in the sea isn’t really encouraged. It’s very rocky and full of coral so not really a pleasant walk either, but the view is lovely.
I visited after staying in Yalong Bay, and I will say it was nice to be in a quieter location.
I will never forget this stay, and am looking forward to visiting again! Thank you, thank you to everyone at MOSAN!
