A fine hotel in the heart of Chepe
My wife and I stayed here for a couple of days while we took care of some business in town. From the outside, it looks like most of the other buildings in that area. But once you step inside, you can see the old Costa Rican style architecture that is so hard to find anymore. Much of the old beauty has been carefully maintained or restored.
Rooms are clean and cool, and the staff were helpful and kind. The Barrio Amón location puts you right in the center of everything.
San José gets written off too quickly by visitors passing through on their way to the beach or the mountains. Don't judge it by the dirt facades and traffic on the main streets, there's real architectural history hiding behind them, and this hotel is a good example. If you give the city a chance and stay somewhere like this, you'll see a side of San José most tourists never bother to look for.

Our worst hotel experience in 5 weeks Costa Rica
We had booked an economy room.
It was not only very old but also unkempt.
No way to operate the air conditioning system instead an old fan, the curtains were dirty, the old carpets disgusting, the bedside lamp had not been dusted for a long time. In the bathroom were still hairs from the predecessor on the shower curtain, the soap rack lubricated with old side steps.We left early (before 8 am) , unfortunately there was no way to get a breakfast to go.
Overall, we had a very bad experience at this hotel.
There are many homeless and junkies in the surrounding streets of the hotel.

Unsere Economy-Zimmer befinden sich im historischen Originalgebäude von 1908 und sind unsere einfachste Zimmerkategorie. Sie verfügen bewusst nicht über eine Klimaanlage, sondern über einen Decken- oder Standventilator. Dennoch sollten alle Zimmer selbstverständlich sauber, gepflegt und in einwandfreiem Zustand sein. Ihre Hinweise zu Sauberkeit und Wartung nehmen wir sehr ernst und haben diese umgehend mit unserem Housekeeping-Team besprochen.
Es tut uns außerdem leid, dass wir Ihnen aufgrund Ihrer frühen Abreise kein Frühstück anbieten konnten. Gerne bereiten wir bei entsprechender Vorankündigung ein Frühstück zum Mitnehmen vor, sofern dies organisatorisch möglich ist.
Unser Hotel liegt im historischen Barrio Amón, einem zentralen Stadtviertel von San José. Wie in vielen Innenstädten größerer Städte gibt es dort soziale Herausforderungen, gleichzeitig befinden sich zahlreiche Museen, Restaurants und kulturelle Sehenswürdigkeiten in unmittelbarer Nähe.

What a great experience overall! My partner and I spent a week in the hotel, and it was wonderful. The staff were all super friendly and attentive, and the owner, Thomas, circulated throughout the property, greeting and chatting with regulars and newbies like us alike and making us feel right at home. The building, property, and rooms are beautiful! It's a historic building with beautiful dark wood and tile work. The rooms are bright and comfortable, the shower was huge, and the water gets HOT! The included breakfast was delicious, and I already miss the gallo pinto!! There's a pool with a jacuzzi (which we used almost nightly) and a gym (we didn't use it, but it is well appointed with a variety of exercise options). The location is great, too - right on the border of Barrio Amon and the city center, and just a few minutes walk to the Atlantic train station, with connections to Cartago and Heredia. Highly, highly recommended. We will definitely stay here again on our next trip to San José! Thanks for everything!

The hotel is a very interesting setting. The history added to the experience. The receptionist was very helpful with directions and great local restaurants.

Winderful, and very helpful staff. Old, but charming property not in the best neighborhood of San José. Some amenities missing and difficult to provide to guests due to property's age. Not able to use the pool, gym, covered entertainment veranda, but were a nice addition.
