Not too bad a place to call home for the week

My wife and I wanted to spend a week in Malta, and in particular in Valletta, so I took a look on Booking.com and this place seemed to be a good choice. The cost of the seven night’s stay in a studio apartment from 7th-14th October worked out to be £540, so I didn’t think that this was too bad for this type of accommodation in the capital. The money was actually taken out of my credit card account on 5th September (you get an email reminder from Booking.com just before this is debited from your card), and I could cancel for free until the day after that. If I cancelled on 7th September I would lose the lot. Now, this is quite unusual for Booking.com, and I’m more used to either the fees being paid at the property during the stay, or the monies being debited a few days before the visit, and free cancellation almost up to the day of arrival. I was made fully aware of these terms at the time of booking, but just make sure that you know that is the case in this instance if you book a Sally Ports apartment through Booking.com.
Along with the cost of the apartment you have to pay €0.50 per person per night, up to the maximum of €5 per person per stay, which is an Environment Fee. We paid this in cash, which we left in the apartment when we vacated it.
The check in is between 15:00-20:00 and check out is between 09:00-11:00, but more on that later.
Soon after booking we got messages through Booking.com from the team at Sally Port with some bits of information.
Around a week before our arrival I began to get messages through Booking.com from Alfredo, who was our Sally Port host. Now this guy is awesome, although we didn’t meet him throughout our stay, but that really didn’t matter. After the initial messages in Booking.com we changed over to WhatsApp for contacting each other, and his communication was first-rate, hence the reason that he didn’t need to be there in person.
Just before we were due to fly out to Malta I contacted Alfredo to find out if there was anywhere we could leave our suitcases, as it was likely that we would be at the apartment at around noon and we couldn’t book in until 15:00. He assured us he would sort something, and in the end we got into the apartment early, and on our arrival. For this he took €5 early cleaning charge, which was a great result for us as we’ve ended up staying with our cases for hours when we have arrived at an accommodation early and they had nowhere to safely store our luggage. Alfredo told us that he would do this for us the day before we arrived, so again just good communication, which set our minds at rest.
Early on the morning of arrival Alfredo excelled himself in sending full instructions on how to find the apartment, along with a walk through video from the street to the front door. He also sent a Google maps link, the key safe code and WiFi code. This made finding and getting into the apartment a breeze.
Once we had confirmed with Alfredo on WhatsApp that we were in the apartment, he then sent a lot more information regarding places to eat, shops etc., so we were fully briefed on everything we needed to know for our weeks stay. I can honestly say that I’ve never had so much information from anyone that we’ve rented accommodation from before, and it was so much appreciated. We’ve stayed in Malta twice before, but it’s always good to get information from a local on the area we’re staying in.
Anyway, onto the apartment. The apartment was on Eagle Street in Valletta, and as we arrived and the taxi dropped us off at the top of the street (it’s not really a street – more of a stepped alleyway), we were about to make our way down to the front door of the apartment, when a city tour bus stopped and the passengers asked us to get out of the way so that they could take photos. We thought that strange, but on Googling it we found out that the street had featured on Game of Thrones, so just a little bit famous.
The steps down to the front door are quite steep, and the apartment is near the bottom of the street (we sometimes found it better to come in from the bottom end). On opening the front door you are presented with steep narrow steps up to the apartment. There’s two flights and no lift, so if you’re infirm then this may not be the apartment for you.
Now, we’d seen photos on Booking.com of the apartment, so really no surprises when we entered – it looked much like it was on the photos. The apartment was clean and tidy, and in a fairly good state of repair.
There was most things that we needed for our week long stay;
• Fully equipped kitchen with hob, oven, microwave, toaster, coffee maker, fridge/freezer, cutlery and crockery.
• Iron (one of the best that we’ve ever had on holiday) and a board.
• Large comfortable bed with good bedding. However, there are no bedside lockers, so nowhere to put your cups of tea or a surface to put your phone on charge beside your bed of an evening. There are side lamps on the walls by both sides of the bed, but the lack of side tables was a bit of a problem.
• Free aircon.
• Free safe – quite small and is not fixed to anything, so can be picked up and carried away, so not much use if someone breaks into the apartment.
• Toiletries and decent towels (including beach towels).
• Excellent shower.
• Plenty of power sockets, but some of these could do with being swapped for ones with USB outlets – I took a couple of USB charging plugs, but could have done with more USB charging points in the apartment.
• Fairly large flat screen TV, with quite a few English channels.
• Hairdryer.
• Fan above bed.
• Wardrobe – this was our main issue with the apartment, in that there was not enough storage space. We were there for a week, so between us we had 28 complete outfits, plus our smalls. There was absolutely no drawers to put things in. The wardrobe had one long shelf and three small shelves. There were only seven coat hangers. It took us quite a while to figure out where to stow all our belongings neatly away for the week. What the apartment could do with is a narrow chest of drawers in front of the bed end. This would be possible and still have room to use the kitchen. Just a suggestion.
• Free WiFi – I tested the download speed at 62.2 Mbps, so very useable.
Pretty much, as you can see, everything was there that we needed except for the few things in the comments, and also somewhere to dry clothes – there is absolutely nowhere to hang clothes up. Now there is a door out to a sort of Juliet balcony, so a clothes hanger could be placed on these railings. Or a pull out clothes line could be fitted in the huge shower cubicle. We ended up clipping our wet beach towels onto the railings outside the door by the bed, and to that end I lost one of my beach towel clips into the void below and never managed to retrieve it.
We got very decent nights sleep every evening of our stay, but we were woken up on our first two mornings by hammering, drilling and shouting at seven-thirty both mornings. Now this was by no means the company’s fault, but we were really thinking that we chose the wrong accommodation. Luckily it never happened from the third morning on, so all’s good.
Now, I’m not a particularly light sleeper, but when I do waken up in the middle of the night I zone in on every little sound, and find it difficult to mask it out, which makes it almost impossible for me to get back to sleep. Unfortunately this apartment has such a sound. I can’t really say what it was, but it’s a sort of low humming sound. It probably was the immersion heater, but I couldn’t be sure. Anyway, I always take ear plugs with me on holiday for such an eventuality, and I used them every night, so again all was good, as they easily blocked out the humming noise. Just be aware if you are the same weird person that I am with my sleep.
Finally, the questions I think would be; did we get good value for money, which I would say yes to, and would we stay here again, which I don’t think we would. Now, let me substantiate that answer. There was nothing wrong with the apartment itself – the few gripes I had were very trivial. The main reason is its location. It’s located at a very low point in the city, so to get up to the main area you have a long drag up some very steep hills. We are both very fit senior citizens, but we found it quite hard work walking up to the city centre each evening, and even some of the days as well. This really is an apartment for the young and extremely fit due to where it is situated.

FAMILY CITY BREAK IN MALTA

Comfortable clean apartment for family in the center of valleta but better in the photos. Some careless details made the difference. In the first sight as you get in everything looks lovely but then you discover what is hidden from the photos.Overatted in price for some old things there were in the room, such as damaged pillows, mold in the walls, no handles on the bedside table. Bad and careless "quickie" preparation for the 3rd bed we asked for. The linens were for a diferrent size of bed and didn't fit so we had to fix it all the time.
It looks like a suite and you pay for a suite but unfortunately by wanting to show vintage they just put whatever they had from old furniture, like the chairs in the kitchen or the very old and smelly wardrobe in the sleeping room. Noisy neighbours if you want to sleep.Modern shower bath.

Great apartment, brilliant location

A central, modern and great place to base yourself out of in beautiful Valletta.
The apartments are huge and while there is no on-site management (front desk etc) the owners will meet and great on arrival and provide you all the information you need (and yep you still get daily room service).
The view from the terrace on the roof is incredible; out bottle of wine on sunset will be very missed.
Lastly the best bed I have slept in in a very long time.
We will return.

Excellent location and great flat

Stayed in number 5 with lovely view of great harbour. Location could not be better and near to bus station so easy to access other locations in Malta e.g. went to Mdina on bus and very easy. 7 day bus pass good value and means you can get to tourist destinations after tourists have left if time it right. All buses air conditioned. Good supermarket to buy takeaway food but also plenty of restaurant choice. Hostess very helpful and arranged airport pick up for us. Recommend
