Experiencing true Berber Culture

We hired a car from Marrakech and travelled to Auberge Palacio Sidi Hamza which is situated in the High Atlas Mountains. What a relief to find such natural and beautiful surroundings away from the hustle and bustle of busy towns and cities. We were warmly greeted by the owner, Latvian. The accommodation was simple but clean. The meals were nutritious and delicious , homemade from produce by the local Berber community. Our favourite evening meal was the Berber tagin which comprises locally grown vegetable and eggs, simply delicious.
Larbi organised two amazing treks into the mountains. His fellow Berber Hassan guided us through hillside, streams, mountains and caves to the water source, which we drunk. Hassan made a fire and barbecued chicken, locally grown vegetables and locally made bread with herb teas (he collected the herbs from the hills as we walked). On our journey we encountered Berbers on donkeys, going about their daily work. They all greeted Hassan and stopped to chat. I’ll never forget these amazing Berber folk and will definitely be returning to Auberge Palacio Sidi Hamza. I I cannot recommend it highly enough if you want to experience and be part of the real Berber culture.

Horrible experience

We were greeted by the owner who demanded that we go to the village to buy pencils and crayons for the local children, despite coming from 3 hours of travel and wanting to rest. When we came back with some pencils, we found a horde of children who almost assaulted us for freshly bought materials. A Third Party scene, but orchestrated by the owner watching the scene.
After dinner he demanded that we pay an additional 45 drams for the waiter - as if we had to serve ourselves instead. He served us tea and demanded that we pay for that too even though it was part of dinner.

Lights and Shadows

As soon as we arrived the instinct would have been to flee.
Unfortunately we did not and regretted it.
Great food, as well as wonderful surroundings.
Priceless kindness and friendliness.
But if you're looking to sleep better look elsewhere.

Visit of the authentic Berber village... but poor quality Accommodation (still justifiable by the place)

Typical rooms, mud and straw, small bathrooms, inadequate cleaning of the room or linen, poor wi-fi. As soon as they arrived there was the distribution of pens and colors to the children. Dinner in the norm with chicken and vegetable tajine, poor breakfast!

Experience

If you decide to experience the Berber village it is the only accommodation. The rooms are acceptable although it is almost impossible to take a shower and the bathroom is a little dilapidated but given the village I would say it is understandable. Prepare for the scene of distribution of gifts to children masterfully managed by the hotel owner (bring something like notebooks, markers). Live music is provided during dinner for a fee.
