outside of town

Hotel Baren—Heidelberg, (Lumen) Germany
This hotel is very comfortable, in a good location but book your parking beforehand as there is not a lot of room. There is a great café next door and a restaurant that is a little on the expensive side attached to the hotel. The room is spacious and the staff friendly. While this place is actually not in Heidelberg proper it is an easy tram ride to the center of town. It was a large room with a large bathroom. However, they could use some soundproofing since we could hear a crying baby for an hour in the night and the man in the next room coughing.

Great self-check-in, but bathroom cleanliness needs improvement
I loved the self-check-in system. The instructions were very clear, and being able to check in at any moment by yourself made it very convenient. The room matched the photos online, and the location is lovely. My only complaint is the bathroom cleanliness. The shower doors had visible limescale and some black spots that should be cleaned.

Apparently the usual process is to receive a lock box code which gives access to the room key.
This didn't happen and although there was someone in the restaurant on the ground floor, waiting for others (it turned out) to make the place ready for service, he just shouted at me through a locked (glazed )door, then ignored me.
Thankfully the other staff who turned up were kind, helping me to retrieve the key.
The room, though clean and with a nice bed, was like an oven, and the hotel was more like an unstaffed lodging house. There were WiFi codes posted on the entrance code, and a bottle of water in the room.
There was a safe, also, but no key or any other welcome information.
I was wary when I saw there was just one previous rating, markjng it a 10. Hmm, I wonder who did that?

No internet...be warned!

When we arrived at the hotel, there was no one to check us in. We waited, and waited, and waited, 45 minutes and finally a girl arrived who had no clue how to check us in. We then had to wait for another lady to arrive. The room was nice and large and really clean. The internet didn't work on the 3rd floor. We were forced to spend out evenings sitting in the stairwell between the 2nd and 3rd floor to get internet. When we brought it up to the desk staff, they gave us many many excuses but no solutions. At minimum, a discount on the room would have been nice since they couldn't provide what they advertise. Not very happy with the manager/owner who we dealt with. Other than that, great location.
