Great stay in the heart of Old Town, Fredrikstad

We added our department tour to Fredrikstad in March 2026, and the choice fell on the beautiful Gamlebyen Hotel – which we are very happy for in the aftermath.
The hotel offers excellent service and tasteful rooms in a contemporary style that harmonizes perfectly with the Old Town environment. It was extra great to be able to conduct our meetings in meeting rooms with a clear historical suspense, which gave the department tour a completely separate framework.
The staff really do everything they can to make your stay as successful as possible. They were helpful with everything from arranging meeting rooms to practical details such as taxi booking and good restaurant recommendations – always with a smile and genuine service setting.
The rooms are somewhat small, but this fits quite naturally in the Old Town and is absolutely not perceived as negative. The hotel also has a larger family room, which is a nice option if you travel together.
We give our warmest recommendations and will be very happy to return!

Avoid living here

We lived in the so-called stable. It's in its own building and has apparently been a prison. The room was small and poorly planned. It was cold, damp and dark. Cobwebs in every nook and cranny. A dog in the next room barked all the time.
There were no bedside tables for all the beds, no curtains to block out the morning sun and one of the mattresses had an uncomfortable pit.

Shame to book this hotel, regretted on arrival but I had no alternative then already booked, hope the rest of you do not

A shame to book this hotel, the room is too little, old furniture, never again would I book this hotel again. recommended not to make the error like me, breakfast you can eat in another room and not included in the price, you have to pay extra 192 kr, a pure disaster,

Not so happy with the hotel

I have stayed at many old three hotels in Norway and otherwise, but this hotel was not so good. Our room had sloping roofs and one could not stand upright. The beds were narrow, about 60 cm wide. Under the beds there was a lot of “hybeldotter”, meaning poor cleaning. Cleaning bag was on the hallway throughout our stay. The receptionist was nice and walked around with ragg socks on her legs - a little special I think. Breakfast we had to take in another building, about 100 m from the hotel. Overall, I had expected better stay and quality in every aspect.
