Nice place to stay! Room lovely - warm and welcoming when we arrived. Very quiet. Great shower.

Not an "apartment" - very disappointing

Location good, however, the title "family apartment" was very misleading, it was not an apartment; it was 2 very small bedrooms and a suboptimal bathroom. There was a shared kitchen but nowhere to sit and eat, unless the dining room was supposed to be the outside picnic tables, not good in the middle of winter! Space in the kitchen was taken up with linen where a nice dining table could have been.
Bathroom sink was useless, way too small to do anything apart from rinse hands.
Every door was a very heavy fire door making it very difficult to move from room to room in the limited space.
There was no toilet brush only a plunger which was needed as the toilet easily blocked.
It was not very clean around the edges, superficially the place looks great but it is not, finishing touches are poor, eg bin in toilet was tiny and broken and no bins in the bedrooms, wardrobes cheap fabrication and out of proportion to the rooms, bathroom door handle loose, shower only had rain mode no good if not wanting to get hair wet and no shower caps provided.
The 2 rooms were quite cell like with tiny windows and not much ventilation.

Potential not realized

So much potential yet too many shortcuts taken during renovations.
On the positive there is underfloor heating in the bathroom. The exterior of the motel is well finished. Unfortunately that's where the positive stops. Let's start outside where this property shares it's space with a some what almost derelict old building that may still be partially used as a boarding establishment. The car parking area is shingle and best described as extremely dangerous. There are countless smelly rubbish bins on display.
Inside the fit out is minimalistic. No face cloths, no tea towels, no toilet brush, no cloths hooks in bathroom, fan makes a noise but doesn't suck, no heated mirror, shower is rain soak only there is no wall mounted shower head, the kitchen is a shared situation with other room guests, there is a toaster and jug unfortunately 1 cup/mug was chipped, no table/desk if you wish to do laptop work, window coverings inadequate letting in a lot of light at night. I could go on but space is restricted.

Perfect Start

At first, I was a little aghast to realise that there's no reception whatsoever. Everything is done via E-Mail. Although I would have appreciated being told that in advance, checking-in and out was very easy that way.
The accommodation is very clean with tea-maiking facilities and even a heating blanket for the bed (much appreciated!). The place has been lovingly and tastefully redone while respecting the original structure.
The Stables is situated at easy walking distance to the city-centre (the streets are a little steep) and restaurants in a very quiet neighbourhood. For me, staying there was the perfect start to my NZ holidays.
