Very good experience
Spent 2 x nights. Continental breakfast was basic - but good. Meals for tea were excellent. I highly recommend the steak on hit Stone. Rooms were clean and tidy. Most importantly the staff were very friendly. I know the Hotel employ local staff and is important to support local community. As an aside, excellent fish n chips next door for lunch.

Opononi Hotel, Hokianga
Had a nice fire going which was the only thing great about our experience.15% surcharge, for bad, slow service. One of our party was up all night with food poisoning from the seafood chowder. Spare ribs were not good, ordered the large double portion, but thankful they only gave us the single portion by mistake, got a refund for the oversight. Pizza base was uncooked. Altogether not a great experience.

Cold ribs no refund
7 of us dined here for lunch.
Wedges came out cold
Rbs came out cold and sauce tasted like tomato sauce. Missed one burger which came out later than everyone else's. Took my ribs up to the bar to complain. No refund offered cost me $32. Utterly unimpressed.

Drive on past, not a place you want to stay
Certainly close to the lowest rating I’ve given an accommodation that we’ve stayed in. They.must have a great IT person to make them look so good on the website. Went to the reception desk when we arrived and nobody in sight. Walked over to the bar where we discovered a sign saying “Checkin at the bar”. We had booked one of the “deluxe waterfront” rooms, and the saving grace was it did have a great view. Where should I start - carpet was filthy, never took off our shoes. Wifi was pretty much non-existent. Glass door was gone from the shower and replaced with a shower curtain, which was really not very clean looking. The shower base frame was wooden - who puts wood in a shower anyway - with badly chipped paint and very grungy appearance. Sink area was a painted wooden counter with the paint badly chipped off, but had a newish vessel sink. Bathroom floor also pretty grungy, probably beyond being able to clean properly, lot of unknown stuff in the corners. The towels seemed clean and were reasonably new at some point in time. The bed was decent and at least the sheets looked clean. Not a real comfortable bed by any standard. If we hadn’t prepaid through booking.com we would have carried on down the road and found someplace else. Not a lot of options for eateries in the area except the hotel restaurant so that’s where we had dinner. Pretty hard to mess up a burger and fries but they managed to create an almost inedible burger. Fries were okay. The saving grace of a one star versus a two star rating was the included continental breakfast. After dinner the evening before, we almost didn’t bother, but, again, not a lot of other options. Breakfast was okay. Toast and spreads, cereals, yogurt with canned fruit cocktail, coffee, tea and juice. I still shudder thinking we persisted and made it through the night.

Mixed Experience, But Great for Families
We booked a “Deluxe Villa” for 2 nights via Booking.com. Upon arrival, we were a bit disappointed: there was no oven or stovetop, only a 2-element hotplate. There’s no AC—just an HRV system and a heater, which I had to use together to manage the room temperature on the cold night. We couldn’t find an extra blanket.
The rooms are spacious, but cleanliness was a concern: we found unknown black spots in the bed and spider webs behind doors up to the ceiling. There was no body wash, only shampoo. After speaking to reception, they promptly changed the beds, provided soap, and replaced the hotplate that wasn’t working well.
We had a complimentary breakfast, which was a simple continental style. My son found an ant in his yogurt, which they immediately replaced.
The second night was difficult as there was a very loud party throughout the night, and we couldn’t find anyone to help. After complaining to Booking.com and the hotel, we received a sincere apology and a refund for one night.
Despite these issues, this is a great place for families: there’s plenty of fun for kids during summer, and the staff are friendly and do their best. I highly recommend stopping by for drinks or food.
