Hotel for the essential and there is no distraction except beauty!

I think not!

I was moved to this guesthouse the last night of my stay in Gais as the place I was staying was full. I arrived after dinner and the staff was nice but this place is a mess. There are three houses connected and no clear directions on where you are going. I dragged my suitcase up three flights of stairs until I found my room. There is no elevator and no help. I wondered through a group of older men with beards and tattoos ( nothing against tattoos but threes guys were scary looking). It seemed more like a hostel than a hotel. My room was spartan and not very clean. I slept on top of a towel as I felt the sheets were not as clean as I would like. The bathroom is stocked with that motel type soap that you don’t want to wash yourself with. The towels were thin and worn. This is a great place for young people who don’t mind roughing it. Unfortunately the price was more than the lovely guest house down the hill I had to leave. Not recommended for the discerning traveler.

Schmutzig und ungemütlich

Pity to have such a dirty bathroom and spiders in the room in such a beautiful setting.
Uncomfortable room without night table, very poor installation. And quite expensive for what you get...
The lady at reception was nice and wrote
About the complains but this will not change the very old furniture and installations

Hotel Gais

Wonderful old Appenzellerhaus, all in wood. Lots of stairs as 3 houses are connected which are not on the same level. Beautiful views and great walks. I've attended a silent retreat and found the staff very friendly and respectful of the retreat. Phantastic végétarien cuisine.
A very santé and heating place to stay. No TV or wifi in the rooms which I found positive. Some of the rooms are a little bit small for double occupation.

Unfriendly

I understood that the hotel would be child friendly but on arrival (after travelling for almost 14 hours) we were greeted with coldness and the owner told off my daughter for looking in a cupboard. I asked for help with my suitcase and was told that there was no one to help. I had to drag my case (with the help of another guest) outside in the snow, up steps then up two flights of stairs to the top. Meals were minimalistic - although they serve soup there is hardly any soup in the bowl. THe salad course consists of JUST lettuce with a sauce. There is no choice for the main course and the servings are extremely small. The owner is not present at night and there are no staff overnight. No bar with service.
