Self-service restaurant review

We wanted something small to eat in the self-service restaurant. The friendly chef made us aware that a cold platter takes some time as he slices everything fresh. It was worth it. Great platter. All fresh.

Hate cuts are cult .

The bonus horst bar with the huge hate cuts is apparently cult. The staff of the “lane kitchen” are cool and expeditious. Food inspectors are probably less welcome. But the hate cuts are good and so are the drinks.

Very Nice service

Super friendly and helpful host. Beautiful setting and view. Rooms are basic but cosy and serving the purpose. Very warm and Nice shower. Great breakfast and tasty dinner, taking care of our dietary requirements.

Lunch

It was a great hike from Engstlensee via Tannalp, Bonistock, Melchsee-Frutt, Tannensee and back to Engstlenalp. We forgot our lunch in the car and stopped for half an hour in Bonistock restaurant. I wanted to have soup but the only one available was from leek that I do not like. My wife said it was OK with wienerli sausages. The sausages I got were roasted on the old oil. The views from the hotel are nice. You can lay down on the wooden arm chairs and enjoy sun with a beer, wine or a cup of tea or coffee.

Good views, great amenities

The staff are kind and welcoming, speak German and English well and are young local people from Luzern.
No idea what to expect, as I simply wandered up from a hike in the mountains. However the place was great (though an imposing and ugly edifice on the mountain), and supplied with every comfort. Towels, warm blankets, even slippers for those without 'inside wear' (apologies for my muddy boots! I was travelling ultra-light mode...). The showers are hot with good pressure and the dorms provide ample storage & sleeping space for the occupants, as well as in-room sinks (Seriously huge sinks. And the rest was overly ample for me as I slept on my own in a 20 person dorm. There was the kind request if I could please refrain from sleeping in every single one of the twenty beds. I was kind and stuck to just the one...).
The food was fine, and in a comparison won from the Truebsee station hotel (creme caramel against ice-cream. Obviously cc wins every time). Breakfast was again ample and diverse, with again typically fresh bread and lots of cheese (not that that is the only thing on offer!).
Cleanliness: everything was spotless. From the 20 beds to the shared showers (not that I tried all of those, but the one I tried was fine).
Wifi: yes. Not in the rooms but in the main areas upstairs. I asked for the password, as my phone had no normal reception.
All in all: I would come back. If I did not have other mountains to explore, that is. Highly recommended (though please do not come in hordes. I like having 20 beds at my disposal, even if I do not make use of them all).
