Charming old building!
We arrived on our cross-country skis with our rucksacks and loved this hotel, situated all by itself directly on the cross-country track. We could also continue our ski trekking safari from here. There is one menu in the evenings but the quality of the meal was very good so we didn't miss an a la carte option. The quality of the bread at breakfast was outstanding! the coffee also excellent! We enjoyed reading at the fire place before and after dinner! An the view from our room called Les Lapins was great!

Home from home in the Jura.
Spent three days with friends at this charming traditional hotel. Clean comfortable and stylish rooms with friendly attentive staff. Set in peaceful farm land with pleasant gardens for relaxation and boules and a walled vegetable garden providing produce for the restaurant. A very enjoyable stay.

Winter at Hotel la Chaux-d'Abel
Hôtel de la Chaux-d’Abel
Went here for short winter retreat in Feb 2015: nice old house on top of a small hill in an idyllic winter landscape, surrounded by horse ranches.
Lots of snow provided perfect conditions for cross-country ski runs in the area, which also make nice, easy hiking trails.
Parking lot (about 10 plus spots) makes hotel convenient for tourists traveling by car, however, not recommendable for those traveling by train unless they wish to walk half an hour from La Ferrière (La Chaux-d’Abel station’s only 15 minutes away but the summer hiking trail is burried when there’s snow, only way left is a busy country road.). Trains from/to La Ferrière go til about 8.30 p.m.
Inside the hotel: There’s a fireplace in the salon (specially advertised on the hotel’s website for winter nights) but the staff aren’t ready to light it, therefore all attention is drawn to the décor of birds and little hearts, which can be found in every last corner of the house.
Bedroom are themed (Little Prince, The Poet, Birds...) and there’s a tea brewing station in each one of them. Our room was unexpectedly small (like some others we managed to get a look at) dispite of the veranda (glazed, not open!, rather a sunroom). „Double-bed“ was made of two cheap, wiggly small beds, pushed together, with worn matraces. Everything was very clean, though partly not too well attended (cracks in bathroom walls, leaking shower). Walls are very thin, so you inevitably take part in the musical activities of the guests two floors. No need to bring a clock, too, cause the footsteps oft he other guests will wake you up at about 7 a.m. anyway.
Despite that, guests are quiet and friendly (mostly families and seniors). The trilingual staff (french, german, english) are very polite and helpful. Matrone stays up every night until late to attend to her guests, always accompanied by her very sweet dog Poppey. On some nights locals will meet in the hotel’s cozy salon, which gives it a nice local touch.
Food: The fact that the hotel is the only place in the area serving food at a late hour would make it convenient to eat there. BUT only if you’re starving, cause it’ll be overcooked and tasteless. The very long wine list only offers overpriced middleclass quality. Although the dining room is very light and sunny in the mornings the atmosphere is always sort of stiff.

Quite romantic
The room itself, the bathrooms, the living room, the breakfast room are all quite consistent in style which I would describe as 'Nostalgic French'.
The homemade dinner was good, the breakfasted turned out to be rather average.
I didn't expect the bathroom to be on the floor - it was not mentioned anywhere although it's probably typical for the hotels built in those times. This made me feel that 150CHF per night was a bit pricey. The walls are paper thin, though. Expect to be woken up by your neighbours.
Sitting outside at the sunset, watching the kitchen garden is a lovely experience.
The environs are beautiful and tranquil, the pretty Etang de la Gruère is not too far away.
Overall, a recommendable experience.

Calm and pleasant
The hotel is located in a sparsely populated area in the middle of fields and forests and therefore perfect for long walks. Unfortunately these walking slopes were not indicated at the hotel but had to be found by ourselves.
We were staying with a baby and a toddler and there was little to no effort of the management/staff to answer to those special needs (hot water for formula etc.). Generally the food for adults for dinner and breakfast was loaded with animal stuff (meat, cheese, cream, eggs, milk etc.) - proved to be unhealthy. However, their idea to put a big bowl on the table contributed to the good ambiance.
