Excellent stay and hospitality
This is our best stay at Taiwan for this trip. Tabakai hostel was built by a member of the 布农族. The owner proclaimed the 2 usual wows by visitors. First was the absence of TV and second the absence of air-conditioning. It turned out for us that the place needed none of that. The surrounding was decorated by beautiful mountains and it was nice and cool throughout our stay. You can actually have a view of 玉山 right in your bed. If you wake up at 5 am, you can actually see head lamps of climbers hiking up that mountain right in the comfort of your bed. Amazing.
Dinner can be arranged with his kitchen partner. It was a sumptuous spread. Although we only stayed for 1 night, we had the privilege of a live guitar and singing performance by the hostel owner after dinner. He was such a talented guitarist and singer and it was such a wonderful experience for us having to hear his stories and singing. This was a one of a kind and unforgettable experience for us.

Wonderful!
This is an absolutely magical guesthouse. The views and vibe are great, the hosts are welcoming. It is in a small hilltribe village. We really enjoyed our three day stay here. That said, it is a challenging area for driving, with hairpin turns and narrow roads, and it is not easy to find good food nearby. We did excursions each day and the area is very beautiful. If you want an interesting experience of local culture, this is a great place. In short, Tabakai itself is wonderful, but the area is a bit hard to navigate.

A clean, modern, and homey place to stay in the mountains!
Dabakai is on a terrace overlooking a river valley that clears up in the mornings for beautiful sunrises before clouds roll in to fill the valley. This is the view you get from the balconies and roof, which also overlook groves of betel nut palm trees and farm plots. In the evening, valley comes alive with the calls of birds, reptiles, and insects, and makes you feel as if are in a rain forest. Breakfast is included (a sandwich with sweet potato and local fruits like passion fruit, papaya, guava, oranges), which is mostly locally sourced. The villagers are Bunun, an aboriginal people of the central mountainous regions of the island. They, as well as their children, are extremely welcoming. This is a great place to relax and see another side of Taiwan.

Wonderful place! Gentle Hosts!
Stayed there for two nights. Getting there is not easy (bus from shuili to Tongfu high school operates not regularly, check timetable before). However, getting there is worth it! Wonderful hotel with very beautiful rooms. The scenic view is amazing if there are no clouds. Hosts are very kind and polite. They don’t speak much English, but communicating with a translation app worked well. The host reserved dinner nearby. Very delicious! Ask for it.
I used the hotel as base for a single day ascent to mount Yushan. Even if you have a car or a scooter, I cannot reccommend this, since the road to the trailhead opens at 6:30. So you will be at the trailhead at 7:30. Now you have to hike really fast to Paiyun Lodge until 10:00, otherwise the police officer won’t let you pass. It is possible, but you have to be really fast and run parts of the trail.

Excellent stay!
Tucked off the main road in a quiet Tsou community, Tabakai is a unique place to stay in the mountains. The hosts are super friendly and the accommodations are modern, clean & comfortable. Would highly recommend.
