Amazing!

Nice people, chill area is very nice, food good (takes a long time but then order earlier and relax while reading :)). In the rooms you have everything you need, shower, toilet, bed with Moskito net. 50$ for a double bed room. Food is about 17000-20000 Schilling, big portions! We liked the atmosphere and the little cat whos name is keys :) if you want to go on a snorkeling trip for about 2,5 hours ask for Mr. Hamadi. 20$ per person. If you go early (8am) you have the chance to see dolphins!! We saw and swam with them and it was just breathtaking!! Matemwe is a nife place to stay, enjoy and relax! Keys bungalows war just perfect!

Simple and friendly. Right on the beach.

Keys Bungalows provides simple accommodations with views right out to sea.
I stayed in a ground floor bungalow. It was basic but acceptable with private bathroom. Water in the shower was a bit salty. I was very warm at night despite the fan. Zanzibar is very humid, at least it was in January.
There were hammocks strewn up between trees outside and the restaurant/bar was a pleasant place to hangout. The guys who worked there were friendly and helpful, if not quite michelin starred chefs. I ate way better food at another backpacker type guesthouse further down the beach. Mohammed's I think it was called.
It seems that they only bought enough internet for one day at a time. So this was often down. And annoyingly they didn't go and get a new voucher until someone complained.
The Lonely Planet mentions that this place is a weird combination of thatched bungalows and a tall concrete building. This is not correct. The (apx) five floor unfinished concrete monstrosity is in fact not connected to Keys. It was built by an Italian who apparently ran into financial problems and never finished it. It's sad and speaks volumes about corruption that such an inappropriate building could be permitted on this simple coastline where no other building is above two floors.
I chose to visit Matemwe because of the book's description of the 'most authentic local' beach destination on Zanzibar. But in hindsight I'd probably have gone elsewhere. There was really nothing to do (apart from diving). The beach was pretty dirty and covered in rubbish (at least in the central area near Keys). And even when the tide was in, the water was extremely shallow. Restaurant options were few and far between.

Good food and great atmosphere

We didn’t stay here but went for drinks and food. The fish was lovely and the portions were big too. Drinks were nice (although they had run out of ice). The barmen are really friendly, the atmosphere is chilled and they have their cute and friendly dog running about. We went here a few times.

nice lobby on beach

nice - simple bungalow room with 3 "stone-wall"-beds of some 180cm length with mosquito nets, separate bath... Room was located behind the lobby - no direct seaview.
nice lobby area / restaurant. Nice to sit and read a book. Breakfast was simple, but fine. (Toast, Egg, Jam... Tea/Koffee) There are also 1-2 further restaurants on the beach in walkable distance. The beach is not very touristic - more a local one - as there is a local village directly behind the hotel - so many children and adults are walking on the beach (playing foolball).. cows, goats, fischerman, boats, sea-urchins - the beach is more for walking than for swimming. But you will be offered an snorchelling tour to close Mnemba Island coral reef if you like ...

The longest wait for a spinach on chapati

We went here for dinner and I have to wait 1 hour & 30 minutes for my chapati sandwich with spinach ... but as they say this standard waiting time in Zanzibar But seriously though 90 minutes for a spinach chapati sandwich??? Guessed you need to call them to place your order and arrive 2hours later so that you don't need to wait that long.
