Good location

Location wise, the youth hostel is prefect, as it on the South Downs way and also adjacent to the train station.
There is a standard YHA, menu which caters for most tastes and reasonably priced. Pizza was a good option. The cafe is open all day.
The cabin prices are disproportionately expensive, £120 a night. Considering they only have two skinny beds in them and no wash facilities. In fact to go to the toilet it is a fair distance away, and with no lighting at night on uneven ground, quite precarious!
The communal room is in poor condition, and when we used it very cold. Not a place to stay for too long.
We then stayed in a room with shower/ toilet. This was usual YHA standard.
Overall I would stay again and recommend if you could get a good price and avios the cabins.

Untrained Staff

Just been for tea and cakes in the cafe. Overgrown with weeds and scrubs in the car park.Food and drinks well priced and quality good. Tables not cleared and floor needed sweeping. Staff seemed more interested in chatting instead of working. We will be back and hope to see it back to its old standard.

Modern YHA

Stayed two nights in one of the camping cabins, every thing was fine. Clean tidy and as it was advertised.
However the price for a Youth Hostel, cabin was really expensive.
There is no facility to pitch your own tent.
Staff friendly.
This YHA is quite large with all the facility ( no washing machine seen) Over all great stay just really pricey
Menus seems standard across all the YHA, which I am happy about and reasonable prices for that. Also notice this ran a café which was open for most part of the day for passersby. YHA HQ is changing stuff some good some not so good

Great stay at YHA South Downs, Lewes - April 2026

All of the staff were really friendly and helpful. Our room (bunks) were incredibly clean and our evening meal and breakfast was tasty and well organised.
This YHA is a great location for beautiful trails on the South Downs, its flint cottage villages and the town of Lewes.
Thank you for making our hiking weekend so comfortable.

South Downs YHA Southease

Good location but on a very fast A road so beware of road traffic. Road traffic noise audible in most bedrooms. Very handy for railway station. Plenty of parking. Would benefit with more communal cooking facilities. Mattresses need replacing.
