We loved it!
As Cloud 9 members who love the Champneys chain, we were very much looking forward to visiting the newest acquisition.So whilst visiting friends nearby, I booked us in for a day visit.
We discovered that day guests go in via a second seperate entrance further round the building by the Champnery's shop, rather than through the hotel reception entrance.
We were given a friendly welcome and a guided tour of the facilities.
It takes a bit of of getting used to the layout. Think three floors.. ..top one has roof pool middle one has Spa reception, shop and changing rooms and lower one mineral pool, saunas and all kinds of lovely stuff. Mobility is a problem for me at the moment but all floors were accessible by lift.
Lunch was in the the cafe / restaurant. They like you to pre-book and Rachel was very careful when checking options for myself as I'm gluten allergic.
We went to the changing rooms to change and spend the morning trying the pools.
Oh my goodness...you walk in and its like stepping back in Champneys time twenty years! Lovely, quiet music playing. All the lockers appeared to work, you are given your own with locking key
Everyone quiet and respectful of the environment. No usage of phones on speaker or hen party's yelling . I loved it!
We tried the roof top pool first. It was lovely swimming inside then through to outside whilst enjoying the jets.
Then we tried the mineral baths downstairs, again so peaceful and relaxing, before trying the saunas and salt room
Then we got dry and had lunch. This was nicely served and very tasty.
The gym is small and there are no classes as yet but I was informed that this is something that may come later.
We then went downstairs to the relax lounge and chilled right out.
Upon leaving we noticed the different skincare ranges that Buxton had compared to other Resorts and I was given some samples to try.
We walked back to the hotel entrance and asked about accessibility of the bedrooms. Once again we were reassured there is lift access to every floor.
Then we checked out the restaurant, chatting to a very friendly Duty Manager who assured me that there were many gf options available.
We had a wonderfully quiet relaxing day and the staff were lovely! We are definitely returning soon for a stay! Thank you Buxton!

Absolutely wonderful hotel right in the centre of Buxton. Wonderful spacious room. We ate in the bar and the food was excellent.

Gone downhill fast
We stayed here a number of times last year and thought we had unearthed a real gem - but returning recently for our first experience of the new ownership we could not believe the decline in standards.
Firstly, you now have to pay for the use of the pools, which adds considerably to the cost of a stay. This is not clear on their website and furthermore, we found the Thermal Spa was closed and had we been made aware of this in advance, we probably wouldn't have paid for spa access.
Secondly, our room was a disappointment. The mattress was lumpy and uncomfortable. The hospitality tray was severely lacking with tea and coffee apparently rationed and we had one packet of biscuits to share! The shampoo dispenser in the shower was not working and the supplies for the bath did not include shampoo either. Whilst not major issues, this lack of attention to detail is unacceptable for a hotel with aspirations to be a 4/5 star establishment.
Thirdly, our experience at breakfast was dreadful. We queued with 3 other couples for at least 10 minutes and it was clear that tables were not being cleared. Eventually we got seated with no apology for the wait to find that our table was not fully laid - no forks and an odd mixture of china and eathenware crockery. The buffet was poor to say the least. There were items missing (no yogurt, some empty cereal containers) and what was there was poor quality - smoothies had the consistency of skimmed milk, the orange juice was topped-up 1 litre at a time from what looked like a supermarket own brand carton. The glasses for the juice were all smeared and it is clear that they had not been washed in hot enough water. There were no bowls for cereal and the staff were in no hurry to find any. In fairness the hot food was good, but it took ages to arrive. Our observation was that the staff have not been trained properly and there was no organisation. There were some "Managers" walkining round carrying mobile phones and looking important but they were oblivious to the chaos. One of them unfortunately caught my wife's eye and was visibly put-out when we asked her for some hot water!
Finally, on our way back to our room we stopped at reception to complain. The Receptionist was polite, but full of corporate platitudes, saying he could not do anything personally but would ensure a Manager would be available when we checked out. Twenty minutes later we returned to Reception to be told that "all the Managers are in a meeting". We decided to wait and two further enquiries were met with the stock response "they're still in their meeting". Our patience ran out after 45 minutes and we left, never to return!
We have subsequently cancelled a reservation we had made at another Champney's Resort.

Disappointing food.
Called in for light lunch (goat’s cheese and beetroot salad, chicken caesar salad for friend). Both were very dry in need of dressing other than a sprinkling of balsamic. Nice place to eat but never again.

We really enjoyed our stay at this hotel. Huge room with very comfortable bed & great shower in bathroom. The spa was lovely and so was breakfast in the morning.
