Nice room, although the electrical outlets were inconveniently placed. Good restaurant for dinner and breakfast, and very close to the Welsh National Roman Legion Museum.

High Expectations - not fulfilled
We had high expectations of our stay at the Priory and the property lived up to expectations on arrival, gorgeous period building set in very picturesque grounds. Unfortunately it went downhill from there. A very impersonal DIY check in process which didn't really fit the luxury stay vibe. After being issued a key, a very dis-interested employee then showed us to the room. Our room was up a flight of stairs, and surprisingly the young man took off up the stairs without offering to carry my wife's case. One of the elderly cleaning ladies, having spotted this rushed up to offer her apologies for her colleague, and her assistance with the luggage, which we politely declined with a smile :) On the way to the room we were surprised to notice that all the carpets in the hallways and stairs were thread-bare and very badly stained, not the standard of presentation we had expected from accommodation of this caliber. When we got to the room, we realised there wasn't air-con in the room, so asked him for a fan, he reluctantly said he would see what he could do. Shortly after a much more engaging person brought us some bottles of cold water, showed us where the fan was in the room, and gave us a much more pleasant introduction to the hotel, saving the day :) Drinks in the garden before dinner on a lovely summer evening were very enjoyable, however dinner in the restaurant was OK, but not as good as we had expected. Some of the other guests around us made the same observation. We did have high expectations based on the hotels reputation and while none of the dishes were a fail, they weren't of the standard we have experienced at other similarly positioned properties. Most of the staff at dinner were lovely, except the young man from check-in who was just as dis-interested while serving in the restaurant (I don't think he is enjoying his vocational choice LOL). In summary, our experience left us with the impression that The Priory is a delightful venue that could have, but unfortunately didn't deliver on the promise of a luxury stay.

Thank you for such a considered review, John - guests who've travelled from New Zealand have earned the right to be listened to carefully. If check-in felt like a set of instructions rather than a welcome, that's a fair hit, and it's why we've changed how arrivals are greeted - the screen is meant to be a helper, not the host. The stair carpets I won't contest at all: they're on the works list and the maintenance sprint is running as I write. On air conditioning I'll be honest - we'd love some too, but the sixteenth century had other priorities, so the main house runs a hot-weather plan instead: fans in by default, cold water at check-in. If dinner underwhelmed on top of all that, then we saved our worst for the bit we're usually best at, which stings. Come back through Wales one day and I'd like the chance to prove the promise. Father’s Day but not enough staff! The food was excellent in the restaurant but we ate early evening & there were a lot of dishes sold out. The staff were all lovely but just not enough of them. Some areas needed a little TLC but overall lovely

Absolute hidden Gem
Small village on outskirts of Newport with a lovely peaceful feeling. We arrived for one night as a way stop on way to Ireland. Sadly arrived too late for the surprisingly many attractions eg National Roman Legion Museum, Roman amphitheatre etc. who knew a small village could offer so much? However managed to have dinner on banks of the river Usk, which was a lovely setting. Hotel was very impressive in terms of setting, architecture, quality. The large patio area and lawn was perfect for an afternoon aperitif. Automated check-in was fine but still needed to find staff to complete. But that was fine as we met Ben. Lovely guy, super welcoming and very professional. Cottage room was lovely and private parking was a very nice touch. Breakfast was superb, the quality of the food was excellent and Ben was on hand to make the experience even better. Highly recommend and will definitely be returning.

Enchanting relaxing stay
We loved our stay. We really enjoyed the local history, my boys loved the museum. The hotel is very pretty, the rooms have everything you need. We got up early for a walk around the grounds and that was just beautiful, lovely country garden. Rabbits, birds, looks like they have a kitchen garden.
We didn’t eat in the hotel but thats an option, just as we have 2 children.
Alot of lovely local options for food, breakfast.
The staff were helpful.
