Nice location in the town center. Parking available front and rear. Big clean bright rooms with great bed n and pillows and huge bathroom. Breakfast is very good, nice helpful staff and amazing choice of local drinks in the bar.

Excellent location service not so great
This hotel was included with a tour package and I’m not sure I would have booked it myself. I had a single room which was a decent size and had a queen size bed in it. Some of the decor was a bit dated. Shower in the room, always a little disappointed when no bath. There were satchels of free toiletries but no hand soap even after the room had been refreshed after my first night. There was a limited amount of tea and coffee in the room, one tea bag when I checked in and this was not topped up when the room was refreshed. Location was excellent easy to walk into the harbour or along the main high street and just across the road was a Lidl and a Tesco so very handy for grabbing food for when out and about. The thing that really let the stay down was the breakfast services. The food was fine but once seated you could wait ages to be asked if you wanted a hot drink and then longer if you wanted hot food. There was a limited selection on the continental breakfast side, more fruit not requiring a bowl would have been good. The waiting staff often brought the wrong food to the wrong tables or didn’t know where the order was supposed to go.

Decent enough
Stayed at The Orkney Hotel for an overnight whilst on business. Nice enough hotel in a decent location with the added bonus of a car park at the rear given the central location. Room was clean and comfortable. The staff were great. The only issue was the lack of WiFi in the room. To be fair to the staff they did offer a number of other rooms as alternatives but no signal could be found in any.
I’m not scoring low for this given how helpful the staff were. Breakfast was good as well.

Good accommodation and Comfortable Room, but that was all
Location - excellent
Atmosphere - we spent v little time in the hotel other than to sleep and eat, so difficult to say.
Room - spacious, but en suite bath scraped and high, therefore difficult to get in and out to use the overhead shower. Controls for shower also difficult to grasp. Base of bath badly scraped also. Toilet and basin both clean however, plus soap provided. Room temperature also good, and if we became too hot at night, we could open the window easily.
Value - at £175 per night booked by Rabbies for us. Value was awful. I would expect that of a four star hotel in Inverness, not a three sat that should be a two star in Kirkwall.
Cleanliness - scraped bath
Noise level - nice and quiet
Service - incompetent. Breakfast starts at 7.30 the venue proclaimed. It started at 7.55am each of two mornings. Waiting staff incompetent at handling build up of customers who were also keen to take advantage of the 7.30am opening. They ended up serving those behind us first! On the second morning we did not ask for a cooked breakfast. We did not have time before our very nearly 8.55am tour start time, so had to starve until later in the day!
To crown our stay, we had a hotel confirmed booking of 8pm in their restaurant on night #2. Upon arrival at the restaurant door, we discovered it locked and a member of staff inside hoovering. He told us they made a late decision to cancel due to a lack of staff! We were very lucky in that Lucanos Italian eaterie was next door and proved very good.
That said, we dined successfully in the hotel restaurant on night #1, and greatly enjoyed the excellent food.
Recommendation to others
Book your meal in Lucanos or another Kirkwall eaterie

"We visited the Kirkwall Orkney Hotel restaurant, and it was a terrible experience. The menu was extremely limited, with very few options. The dining room was freezing, and when another guest asked the hotel owner to turn on the heating, they were not receptive although they did turn on a smsll heater. Several guests had their coats on whilst waiting/eating. The fire door was nailed shut, which is a huge safety concern and had a hole in the bottom of it. The service was slow, and the menu was very limited. Overall, a dangerous and awful experience—I strongly advise against it."
