The perfect base for exploring the Lake District
I spent two nights at Elterwater Hostel as a solo female traveller, using it as my base for hiking around Elterwater and Great Langdale, and I couldn't have chosen a better place to stay.
From the moment I arrived until I checked out, every member of staff made me feel genuinely welcome. Check-in was smooth and friendly, and Andy deserves a special mention for his kindness, professionalism and warm personality. I often saw him in the evenings and during meal times, and he always went out of his way to help guests.
I stayed in a six-bed female dorm. Although the room isn't particularly spacious, it worked perfectly for me because I was travelling with only a backpack. Travellers with large suitcases should know that storage space is limited, and larger bags may not fit underneath the beds, so the room can feel a little crowded.
The shared bathroom was excellent—modern, spotless and thoughtfully designed. Throughout my stay, every part of the hostel was exceptionally clean and very well maintained.
I had breakfast at the hostel on both mornings and was impressed by the quality of the food. They also serve dinner from a reasonably priced menu. Although there is a fantastic self-catering kitchen if you prefer to cook, I felt the meals offered excellent value considering the quality, convenience and friendly service.
Speaking of the kitchen, it's honestly one of the best hostel kitchens I've ever seen. It's spacious, incredibly well equipped and maintained to an exceptionally high standard. Another lovely touch was the complimentary tea available throughout the day, which was perfect after spending hours hiking.
The lounge area was another highlight. It was warm, cosy and inviting—a wonderful place to relax, read or chat with other guests after a long day outdoors.
The location couldn't be better for anyone who enjoys walking and nature. The hostel offers easy access to fantastic hiking trails, while Elterwater itself is peaceful, charming and much quieter than some of the Lake District's better-known villages. It felt like a genuinely authentic place rather than somewhere overwhelmed by tourism.
One practical tip for anyone planning to hike in the area: mobile coverage can be unreliable in many parts of the Lake District. I highly recommend downloading offline maps before your trip. The good news is that the hostel offers free Wi-Fi, making it easy to plan your walks, check the weather or download maps before heading out each day.
During my stay, Andy mentioned that they don't often receive visitors from Brazil or South America. As a Brazilian, I found that surprising because this area is absolutely stunning. If you're visiting the Lake District and looking for spectacular scenery, excellent hiking, a peaceful atmosphere and a welcoming hostel, I would strongly encourage you to include Elterwater in your itinerary.
This hostel combines everything I look for when travelling: outstanding hospitality, excellent facilities, delicious food, a fantastic location and a warm, welcoming atmosphere. I would return without hesitation and recommend it wholeheartedly to solo travellers, hikers and anyone wanting to experience one of the most beautiful and tranquil parts of the Lake District.

Views and walks a plenty.
Beautiful location, great relaxed and welcoming atmosphere with pubs / cafes nearby. We had ensuite family room. Really comfortable beds. Super to sit on terrace with a cuppa or a beer and soak in views. Kitchen facilities all great. Great breakfast ( extra) sitting in the morning sun. Parking a short stroll away - but all of this is clear at booking and pre arrival info is helpful. Also got helpful tips for walk to local tarn for a dip.

12 middle-aged professional guys from Manchester on their annual walking weekend
This hostel is simply the best; no question.
On the edge of the delightful village of Elterwater in the heart of the Lakes, it provides restful accommodation including comfortable bunks and bedding, bed-lights and USB ports, clean toilet facilities with gushing hot showers, and a very efficient drying room. The in-house food is always plentiful and delicious, but ample self-service cooking facilities are available.
The customer service from Charlie and Andy, both long-term managers is friendly, efficient and good humoured; exemplary and a delight to do business with.
My group of middle-aged guys from Didsbury, Manchester have been coming here since 2018 and we never consider going elsewhere. This year, just when we thought it could not be bettered, we arrived to find a new accommodation block for the staff had been built and the hostel itself slightly reordered. It is simply brilliant value!

A beautiful place to be with very friendly staff and good facilities
On arrival in this beautiful village we were warmly welcomed by very friendly staff. Everything was carefully explained in person about the facilities and the staff were very flexible in meeting our needs. Drying room is very effective if a bit small and the morning breakfast was first class especially at the reasonable price. An enjoyable experience thank you.

A wonderful hostel to stay in, comfortable, clean, beautiful setting and really friendly and helpful staff. We keep coming here because there's no other hostel like it in the Lakes!
