Surprising
When I first arrived in Ukraine, I needed a place to stay. I came across the Diplomat Hotel via Air BNB and moved into a sufficient room. The bed was comfortable and the room adequate for 1 guy by himself. however, the AC was unreliable so during some of the hot days, you're left to the mercy of a breeze hitting the 11th floor (depending on where you stay of course) which is what it is. I purchased an oscillating fan and it solved most of my problems. So that was nothing major, the only thing that really stuck with me was the smell coming up from the drains. (or somewhere in the bathroom)
I would routinely ensure that water went down every drain in the apartment to prevent the rotten egg smell from overtaking the apartment. I don't know where it came from, but there was also a 2 person Jacuzzi in my room; so I flushed that out every other week to help keep the drains healthy. I don't know if it really had an effect overall, but it made me feel like I was at least trying to solve a problem on my own. This is the only issue I took 1 star away for.
The internet service was extremely fast, so there was no issue doing anything I wanted to in the digital realm. (I could write far too lengthy reviews on Trip Adviser to my heart's content! haha)
I don't know if I would go straight to the Diplomat Hotel straight away, but for the price, and being by myself; it was tolerable. (Air BNB may vary from actual hotel rooms though, I am not sure, some people own the apartments within the building)

Reservation not Guaranteed
Made a reservation 3 weeks away. One week out they tried to get us to pay more than our guaranteed reservation amount. They tried to raise the price and then cancelled us because they were double booked. Don't give them a deposit. If they can get more money they will cancel you.

We have almost been left to sleep on the street at night.
I have made a reservation on booking and hotel clearly had a 24 hours reception. However that was not the case, we had a late flight and arrived at around 2 am. The guard told us that the hotel is closed and all personnel is leaving at around 8 pm(the hotel is located in an apartment building so the guard is not working for a hotel). However, he was able to call an owner of the hotel who literally told us: "it is closed, get the f@#k out of here". I was super pissed and we found another hotel. However during our conversation the owner mentioned that I have a US credit card, the fact that he knows something about my credit card is even more concerning. Imediately after our conversation I recieved an email from booking.com that I did not show up and the booking was cancelled by the hotel.

Rubbish
I stayed at the Diplomat ApartHotel over the champions league weekend of May 26-27 with my 11 year old son. I booked the hotel via booking.com (who provided excellent service throughout this sorry episode).
The Diplomat hotel, unfortunately much like many hotels in Kiev, chose to take full advantage of desperate fans by massively increasing their pricing over this weekend. A normal stay at the Diplomat Hotel in Kiev would cost US$36 per night. For the Champions league weekend, they had the cheek to increase the price by over 20x the normal price!!
On May 23rd I made a booking via Booking.com for 2 nights for a total of HK$11,845 (or approximately US$755 per night). This price was already 21x the normal US$36 per night that the Diplomat hotel would charge a guest. You would think that this would be a sufficient mark up for most greedy hoteliers, right? Not the Diplomat. They chose to cancel my booking on the pretence of 'my Credit Card didn't work' (I have had written confirmation from my bank that there were no problems with my credit card. In fact, they saw the request for approval come in from the hotel and allowed it. I also had no problems using this same Credit card throughout my weekend in Kiev, and have Credit card statements to prove it). I was invited by booking.com to re-book the hotel and the now (further) inflated price of US$870 per night (a whopping 24x multiple of the normal price!!!). I used a different credit card to pay . deposit and locked in the room.
You would think that after charging this ridiculous amount of money, the Diplomat would roll out the red carpet for their guests? Not so unfortunately.. I arrived at the Diplomat on the morning of Saturday May 26th with my 11 year old son, after a gruelling 15 of travel from Hong Kong. We arrived at around 10.30am only to be told that:
(1) I would need to pay the remaining full amount of the 2 day hotel stay before they would give me a room key and that the full amount would need to be settled in cash, in the local Ukranian currency
(2) It would be impossible to let me have a 2 hour early check-in so that my son and I could rest and take a shower before going out to look for banks to withdraw money from
After walking around the area for an hour trying various ATM machines without success, I decided to take my son to go and get some breakfast and resume my search afterwards. Unfortunately no banks seemed compatible with my bank in Hong Kong but thankfully I had enough USD with me to convert at a money changer and pay the Hotel in full.
We finally managed to get into our room at around 3pm in the afternoon. Now, if I was paying $36 per night, my expectations would clearly be a lot lower. However, at almost $1000 per night, one would expect to walk into a palace..? Not so. In fairness, the room was large and clean with functioning air conditioning and hot water. However, no blackout curtains and Europe in the summer meant that the light would stream in and wake you up at 5am in the morning! given the journey we had to get there (and the unfortunate result of the game!) we really could have done with a lye-in on Sunday! The bed was also very uncomfortable and it felt like the mattress was 50 years old!!
I'd like to emphasise that I have no problem with Hoteliers charging more during busy seasons. Its clearly a free market and its entirely up to visitors to choose to stay where they want. My problem is:
(1) that this hotelier clearly saw an opportunity to charge me more due to an increase in demand so cancelled my booking and refused to honour my previous rate even though I re-booked literally 15 minutes later!
(2) having charged me the ridiculous amount that they did, they refused to allow me to settle the charge by credit card (even though they had managed to charge me a deposit via credit card!) AND REFUSED TO ALLOW ME AN EARLY CHECK-IN!!!!
I would urge all travellers to choose alternative accommodation when going to Kiev

Diplomat disappointed
This is my first and last time I will try the Diplomat and living in Florida I have many choices in Hotels and ended up here. At first driving up to the Diplomat it is an impressive building, but one we arrives the first thing I experienced was the valet, they directed me the curb to check in and I wasn't sure I was going to use them or self park and as soon as I mentioned that they walked away and continued to double park cars around us, even though they knew I was letting my wife out and then leave to park my car. It then took about 10 min for them to move cars out of the way (laughing the entire time) for me to leave. After arriving in our room # 1031 (great balcony) the smell was of an old smoking room where they try to hide the smell with cleaning products. And the bathroom smelled as if there was a fire in it with, most likely coming out of the vents. The AC make a strange buzzing sound. That said we will be choosing a different hotel in the area next time we want a weekend getaway.
