Really friendly experience at low cost

Our short stay (1 night) was a positive and pleasant experience. We arrived from the airport at roughly 11pm, and the lodge had arranged a free airport transfer and kept the kitchen open as we hadn’t been able to eat all day, which was very appreciative. The staff were the trip's highlight: accommodating, funny, and friendly, providing an excellent experience. The rooms were valued for the price, and we received a complimentary breakfast. The exterior was really nice, with a pool and lots of seating!

Adequate - good location

I stayed two nights here in a private room. It is fine.
Good things: great location for walking to sights, cafes, etc; Good wifi; Functional room/bathroom; Hang out areas; nice and helpful staff.
The stuff I didn't love: it's pretty run down, the kitchen was very dirty, & cockroaches in my room (small ones and just around the fridge).
I would stay there again but I wouldn't be enthusiastic about it.

There were a lot of bedbugs in multiple rooms. The high ratings were from before 2020, and recently there have only been low ratings.

There were mass infestations of bedbugs in several rooms.
The bed in the room I stayed in had about 30 bedbugs in it, and I was bitten many times overnight.
The kitchen only had unsanitary cooking equipment and tableware that could not be used.
The Wi-Fi was slow and only available near the front desk, so it was essentially unusable.
The high ratings on both TripAdvisor and Google Maps were posted before 2020, but from 2021 onwards, this accommodation is unsanitary and the staff are awful.
Several guests gave up on getting a refund and moved on to other accommodations.

A breeding ground for bedbugs, the shared kitchen is too dirty to use.

Most of the rooms are infested with bedbugs. If you sleep overnight, you will be bitten and eaten 30-50 times. The shared kitchen is extremely unsanitary and you cannot cook in it.

Simple and run-down but clean and friendly

Lusaka Backpackers is a simple and somewhat run-down place, but with fun and friendly staff and a great atmosphere. In the yard guests, staff, locals and general hangarounds mingle, chat, play pool or swim in it - it is easy to feel welcome and get to know people. The restaurant cooks simple but tasty meals from early to late. Don't expect any luxury though, or even that everything works. Our room was clean, beds were fine and with little workarounds for things like doors that don't close, it was all in all a pleasant stay
